Renewed plea for tips on boy missing in B.C., possibly with unidentified caretaker

Authorities are renewing their plea for information about an 11-year-old boy who went missing in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, potentially with a caretaker who has yet to be identified.

The RCMP has said Kai Pavlovic’s mysterious disappearance does not yet meet the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert, but that anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact law enforcement immediately.

Burnaby RCMP officers discovered him missing on Sept. 26 after being asked to conduct a wellness check on the boy.

Cpl. Laura Hirst said investigators have spoken with his family and extended family, and have “reason to believe Kai is staying with a caregiver who police are actively working to identify.”

“We believe there are people who know who this caretaker is and where they are located, and we are appealing for them to come forward and speak to police,” said Hirst.

Authorities are also hoping to speak with any parents whose children have shared playdates or extracurricular activities with the missing child, as well as any operators or instructors familiar with him.

The RCMP’s top priority is to find Kai and “confirm his wellbeing,” Hirst said.

Authorities would not confirm any details of the child’s custody, or information contained in an online fundraiser purportedly set up by extended family in New Zealand.

“Kai has been living in Canada and had limited contact with family overseas over the last 12 months,” reads the fundraiser. “Recently, concern for his wellbeing was raised by his deceased father’s family.”

RCMP launch billboards to find missing Burnaby, B.C., 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic

Burnaby RCMP are launching a B.C.-wide billboard campaign as they continue their search for missing 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic.

The billboards will be located in multiple locations throughout the Lower Mainland and the province starting Friday, according to police.

“We want everyone to be on the lookout for Kai. Our investigators are working tirelessly to locate him, and we are asking for the public’s help as part of that ongoing effort,” Burnaby RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Laura Hirst said in a news release.

Police believe he is with a "caretaker" — but they don't know who that person is.

“We are making a direct appeal to that caretaker or anyone who knows them,” said Hirst. “If you have Kai in your care, you need to come forward and contact the Burnaby RCMP. We need to confirm Kai’s safety and well-being.”

Police are also sharing a Serbian-language news release, as Kai's family has close connections to the Serbian community, according to Hirst.

So has he been attending school or was he in BC for a vacation? It is a little vague. If he attended school, wouldn't the school know his address and caretaker?

'We are devastated': Family of 11-year-old boy missing in British Columbia appeal for information

The family of an 11-year-old boy with family in New Zealand and Canada are urging anyone with information to come forward, nearly a month after concerns were raised about his whereabouts with police in British Columbia.

RNZ earlier reported Kai Pavlovic's New Zealand-based family had "grave concerns for his safety".

Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a request for a well-being check for Kai on 26 September. They earlier said it was believed he was with a caretaker who they are actively working to identify.

In a statement to RNZ on Friday, Kai's aunt Helen Kok said Kai, who is a New Zealand citizen is an "exceptionally kind, caring, intelligent, and funny young boy".

Kai relocated with his mother and stepfather to Vancouver in 2023.

"We have lost contact with Kai. His extended family from both Montenegro and New Zealand love him deeply, and miss him terribly.

"As a family we are devastated by the situation, and continue to be gravely concerned for Kai's wellbeing.

So he moved with stepdad and mom who I am guessing told LE he is with a caretaker...

Casey Anthony said a nanny, Lori Daybell said with Melanie Gibb... In both cases, the child/ren were not alive and were never with a caretaker.

Hoping this boy is found safe however a month later LE can't name the caretaker or confirm one exists or he is really with the person.

So far as I can tell anyhow...
