Colorado dentist accused of poisoning wife and mom of 6 after ‘heinous, complex and calculated’ crime leaves her brain dead

March 20, 2023
A 45-year-old dentist in Colorado faces charges of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, a mother of six children, after severe headaches left her brain dead, investigators said over the weekend.

According to the Aurora Police Department, James Toliver Craig was taken into custody early Sunday morning, days after he allegedly drove his 43-year-old wife to the hospital.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the wife’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was placed on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. She was declared medically brain dead a short time later.” further investigation revealed that the victim’s sudden death was linked to poison.

Although authorities did not immediately identify the victim, a since-removed website for Craig’s Summerbrook Dental practice said her name was Angela. A Law&Crime search of the Wayback Machine-archived version of that website shows that Dr. Jim Craig called himself and Angela “the proud parents of six great kids”:

Case of Aurora dentist accused of murdering wife finally heading for trial

After numerous delays and three separate sets of attorneys, the Aurora dentist accused of poisoning his wife finally appears to be headed for trial.

James Craig will stand trial for murder in the March 2023 alleged poisoning death of his wife, Angela.

Jury selection will begin July 10 in a proceeding that is expected to last three weeks. It is the third trial date set in the high-profile murder case.

The tale of Angela Craig's agonizing last days has had so many bizarre developments that it attracted the attention of three major murder mystery programs — 2020, Dateline, and 48 Hours.

This coming Valentine's Day, Craig is scheduled to be in an Arapahoe County courtroom, where investigators will seek to explain a murder-for-hire he allegedly planned from jail.

It's unclear who Craig allegedly wanted killed, but Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan confirmed that an Aurora detective was on the alleged hit list.

Craig, 46, faces a total of six charges involving his wife's death, including first-degree murder. He was in court Friday represented by his third set of attorneys in less than two years.

Prosecutors to present evidence Colorado dentist charged in wife's death tried to kill detective

Prosecutors on Friday are set to present evidence that a Colorado dentist charged with killing his wife also tried to get a fellow inmate to kill a detective investigating him.

Prosecutors are scheduled to present more details about what they believe happened during a hearing Friday afternoon in order to convince a judge that Craig should also be prosecuted for those charges during his trial.

Craig’s trial has been delayed and no new date has been set yet.

Attorney for Aurora dentist accused of poisoning wife is arrested in arson of own home, withdraws on eve of murder trial

An attorney for the Aurora dentist charged with poisoning his wife to death withdrew from the case this week after he was arrested on suspicion of arson — first responders found the lawyer sitting on the porch of his Centennial home as it burned behind him Saturday night.

Robert Werking withdrew as counsel for murder suspect James Craig on Tuesday, just two days after his arrest and just 10 days before Craig’s murder trial was set to start in Arapahoe County District Court.

It’s the second time that a member of Craig’s legal team has pulled out on the eve of the dentist’s high-profile trial.

Werking owned the home that burned with his wife, Lisa Fine Moses, who is also an attorney representing Craig. She did not withdraw from the murder case, and Craig is now represented by Fine Moses and attorney Ashley Witham, who joined the team on June 18.

Fine Moses did not return a request for comment Thursday. Werking could not be reached.

Craig is scheduled for a jury trial beginning July 10.

South Metro Fire Rescue crews responded to Werking and Moses Fines’ Centennial house just before midnight Saturday, agency spokesman Brian Willie said.

First responders found Werking sitting on the front porch of the single-family home with “active flames behind him,” Arapahoe County sheriff’s Deputy John Bartmann said, noting that Werking’s actions were “kind of odd.” He declined to provide additional information, citing the ongoing investigation.

Werking was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Willie said. No one else was at the home and no other structures were burned, he said. Firefighters got the fire under control at 12:58 a.m. Sunday and discovered major damage to the house, Willie said.

“Once we got the fire out and under control, our investigators found there was some type of incendiary accelerant, and they’re actively working with the sheriff’s department,” Willie said.

Attorney withdraws from Aurora dentist murder trial after arson arrest

One of the attorneys representing a former Aurora dentist charged with the murder of his wife has withdrawn from the case after his own arrest on an arson charge.

It's not clear whether Craig's new trial will be able to begin on July 10 as scheduled.

Just quickly got up to date on this case. So this wife murderer's attorney has been arrested for arson of his own home.

Also, Colorado and it reminds me a bit of Morphew.

Don't ask me why but it won't let me respond to that post, then even when I went to delete it, it wouldn't let me either.

Anyhow, I didn't get totally into this one but do know most, if not all, I think. I may watch this trial though as it is quite the case and there sure is nothing else going on lately.

In opening statements, prosecutors say Colorado dentist fatally poisoned his wife due to financial troubles and affair

Colorado dentist James Craig fatally poisoned his wife in 2023 because of his growing financial troubles and his affair with another woman, prosecutors alleged in opening statements of his murder trial Tuesday.

Prosecutor Ryan Brackley said the evidence will show Craig, 47, poisoned his wife, Angela, in March 2023 with a mix of arsenic, cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a medication commonly found in eyedrops. Once she was in the hospital, he filled a pill with cyanide and made sure she took it, killing her, according to the prosecution.

“He didn’t go into that room to save Angela’s life,” Brackley said. “He didn’t go into that room to fight for her life or support her. He went into that room to murder her, to deliberately and intentionally end her life with a fatal dose of cyanide.”

In contrast, defense attorney Ashley Whitham said investigators had “tunnel vision” and argued the case against him was based on “speculation and assumptions.” Craig had multiple affairs throughout their 23-year marriage, she said, so the prosecution’s motive did not make sense.

“You may not like him, you may not think he’s a good husband. But that’s not what you’re here to decide,” Whitham said.

She also noted Angela Craig had said she was “broken” and “struggling,” implying to the jury that her death may have been a suicide.https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/10/us/james-craig-trial-colorado-dentist-poisoning

So the prosecution is saying, the motive is money and sex. That is a deadly combination with some psychos.

James Craig details poisoning of his wife in 'timeline', claims she was in on it

An Aurora Police Department detective on Friday read portions of a four-page "timeline" that James Craig wrote about what led up to the death of his wife, Angela Craig, in 2023, in which he described the multiple ways she was poisoned.

Friday afternoon, Detective Bobbi Olson testified about the "timeline," which, according to court testimony, was the first time James Craig had written down anything about what happened to his wife.

Olson read portions of the document at the direction of prosecutors. She said that in the document, Craig admitted to having affairs with multiple women and that his wife found out about them while he was out of town on a ski trip.

Olson read that Craig said even after his wife found out, he went to Las Vegas and had another affair. According to the testimony, when he returned, he "again" asked his wife Angela for a divorce.

Angela Craig responded, according to what James Craig wrote, by saying she "was just going to end her life." James Craig wrote in the timeline that he "begged her not to do it."

According to Olson's testimony, James Craig wrote in the timeline that Angela Craig talked about crashing her car into a pylon, but worried she would not die. He claimed that Angela then began researching poisons.

Prosecutors asked Olson if she had uncovered any evidence that Angela Craig had done that, and she replied, "No."
He said in the letter that the two of them came up with four possible poisons, including arsenic, oleander, potassium cyanide, and tetrahydrozoline (an ingredient in Visine that's toxic if ingested).

James Craig said that Angela Craig later asked him to research poisons for her and that he had a "change of heart" and wrote in the timeline, "I was not going to try and back her out of it," a reference to Angela Craig taking her own life.

In the letter, he said that two Mondays ago (a reference to March 6, 2023), they tried the eyedrops, and that was their first trip to the ER. According to court testimony, James Craig purchased a total of 19 Visine bottles.

"I must not have calculated the dose correctly, or she didn’t take all the drops," Olson recounted, James Craig writing.

Next, he said they tried arsenic, and he wrote that Angela Craig asked him to put it in a protein shake so she wouldn't taste it. He wrote in the timeline that she "chugged it down."

"I did not want to tell the physicians what she had taken because she was not telling them what she had taken either," Olson testified that James Craig wrote.

James Craig wrote in the timeline that when Angela Craig was in the hospital on March 9, 2023, she asked him to research the "fastest poisons." According to court testimony, he wrote, he "figured it was either potassium chloride, but that would hurt a lot going into her IV, or cyanide."

"But when did he order the cyanide?" prosecutors asked Olson.

"March 8," she replied.

Earlier Friday, Olson testified that James Craig ordered the potassium cyanide for pickup, and he hoped to pick it up on March 9. She also said that data from his phone showed that on March 8, he drove from his home to Midland Scientific, the company from which he purchased the cyanide.

Olson will continue her testimony about the timeline Monday morning.

Ok, dude, if she wanted to commit suicide, why didn't SHE do the research and procure the poisons herself?

This guy clearly didnt realise it is against the law to aid and abet a suicide. It is the only charge regarding a suicide that can be brought because the person themselves cannot be prosecuted, as they are usually dead.

Totally disagree. This was a planned murder and he tried to add this in to cover his own butt when he planned

Although James Craig wrote a lengthy iPhone note that the lead detective said tried to deflect suspicion from himself in his wife's death, he will not take the stand in his own defense.

After calling nearly 50 witnesses over 10 days of testimony, prosecutors making their case against James Craig for the poisoning of his wife have rested. Defense attorneys also rested their case, calling no witnesses.

The jury was sent home early as counsel on both sides laid out jury instructions ahead of closing arguments and deliberation. Closing arguments will begin Tuesday at 9 a.m.

'Angela Craig fought to live' | Jury enters deliberations in dentist's murder trial

The devil's in the details, prosecutors told the jury Tuesday in their closing arguments, and James Craig couldn't keep the details of his wife's death straight.

“You all know from your reason and common sense that the truth doesn't change," said prosecutor Michael Mauro. "James Craig isn't telling the truth.”

Craig is accused of slowly poisoning his wife, Angela, and faces a first-degree murder charge, along with other criminal accusations he picked up while awaiting trial. Now, his fate and the conclusion of the case are in the hands of an Arapahoe County jury.

Whether he was aiding and abetting a suicide or committing a murder, the sentence is probably the same. You're still murdering someone - in his case, poisoning someone.

The jury returned guilty verdicts on first-degree murder, two counts of solicitation to commit tampering with physical evidence, two counts of solicitation to commit first-degree perjury, and solicitation to commit first-degree murder.

The conviction for first-degree murder includes a sentence of up to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as Colorado doesn't have the death penalty.
