29-year-old on solo trip across US leaves burger joint and vanishes, OR cops say

A 29-year-old vanished on a solo trip across the country after she last seen leaving a burger joint in Oregon, deputies said.

Kaylee Birt disappeared April 4, the Harney County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Birt left the The Fields Station in her gold 2008 Chevy Malibu with an Oregon license plate of GW21073, deputies said.

The Fields Station is a restaurant, store, motel and gas station in Fields, which is a remote and unincorporated community in southeastern Oregon.

She was headed to Iowa, deputies said, but her vehicle was discovered abandoned April 6 in a remote part of Harney County in Oregon, deputies said.

Deputies said they determined a location where her cell phone last pinged, and they searched the area but couldn’t find her.

Search teams looked for her for seven days by “air, ground, UTV, drone, foot and horseback,” deputies said.

However, authority-led search efforts ended April 10.

“The Sheriff’s Office will post signage near Kaylee’s last known location, informing visitors to the area to be vigilant of any potential evidence,” deputies said.

Well, if she is found alive, I'd love to hear what the deal is. Obviously, I'd like her to be found alive. I just am perplexed by her potentially wandering around for 17 days now.
It wouldn't be the first one...

I know we'd all prefer she was alive but yeah, hard to understand no doubt what the deal is here.

I really like what SOME of these families are doing. In helping others.

It's really imo an involved subject but sadly money, resources, PDs, etc. they don't always have the authorization or the $$ or politics play in. Pretty sure most know my opinion on a lot of it but it really goes both ways. Some try to use it and make off it and others really want to help and lost people in their lives in their name.

Things do need to change. I went back and forth on Dylan's mom through his being missing. I so understood her but in the same breath you are told not to say anything and trust the process, LE, etc. And then you worry if you say something when in such grief, you will wreck the case...

However, I totally understood the mamabear thing. I recognize similar in Kaylee's dad in the ID 4. I've seen it in others. Ours was smaller, not so known, but it was quite something to learn of the system. It was HARD to trust in it.

I think a lot of things need to chance. In the system. I don't know that they ever will.

But I know this, people helping people like this is good. If not in it for the wrong reasons and doing it as a tribute to their child and change things and help others.

Shenandoah family wants more urgency in search for daughter missing in Oregon

On April 4, Kaylee Birt, a Shenandoah woman who has been living in Klamath Falls, Oregon, went missing in the Oregon wilderness. She was on her way to Iowa for a visit.
  • Birt's car was found and her footprints located, but no other evidence has been discovered.
  • Her parents have been frustrated by the pace of the investigation and what they say is a lack of communication from the Harney County Sheriff's Office.
  • "The longer it goes without finding a body, or anything, your mind goes to foul play, then. And time, to me, is of the essence," said Michelle Birt, Kaylee's mom.

BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT:

Anchor: A 29-year-old Iowa woman is missing in the Oregon wilderness, and her parents are desperate to find her. Katrina Markel met with the family about what they’ve described as a 'nightmare.'

Reporter: Shenandoah parents, Michelle and Jason Birt, just want to know what happened to their daughter Kaylee. She went missing in Oregon earlier this month, and they're frustrated by what they say is a lack of information from authorities.

Jason: "We've been fighting to get any type of reports."

Kaylee Birt was driving home to Shenandoah from Klamath Falls, Oregon when her family lost contact on April 4 in a sparsely populated part of the state. I asked Michelle about their last conversation.

"Just her faith, how she was excited to come home. Just everyday talk," she said.

Authorities found Kaylee's car; her family traveled there to look themselves. They say they spotted her footprints, but no other evidence. The Birts were told the search was called off on April 10.

"We just want them to work to find Kaylee because she is worth more than 6 days," Michelle said.

A rancher reported to deputies that he spotted her, but she seemed disoriented and left before help arrived.

"Kaylee's got three nephews, two brothers, both sets of grandparents, she's not suicidal," said Jason.

I called the Harney County Sheriff and a sergeant, but hadn't heard back as of my deadline.

Trey Werner from Wilderness Search Investigations is helping the Birts: "We can only do so much when government agencies do not help non-government agencies..."

Following our interview, Michelle said the sheriff's sergeant called, saying another K-9 search is planned in early May.

The non-profit Dylan's Legacytold me it will also conduct a K-9 search.

"The longer it goes without finding a body, or anything, your mind goes to foul play, then. And time, to me, is of the essence," said Michelle.

Heartbroken, the Birts say prayers and meals from neighbors help as they search for a daughter who loves the outdoors, playing softball, and making people laugh.

We were notified about an hour ago that remains have been found that are believed to be our Kaylee bean. We are waiting on confirmation.

Sh*t. I was really hoping maybe just maybe she went off on her own, was camping, something--I didn't really believe it but was HOPING. If I recall I didn't really get in this one to what I thought.

So now--assuming it is her--we have was it murder, suicide or accident I guess?

Sad.

I think they have her age wrong in this report, she was 29. But it does seem to confirm it is her. Very sad, but she will be going back to Iowa anyway, may she RIP.

(Burns, OR) – Officials with the Harney County, Oregon Sheriff’s Department, late Saturday night, said the remains of a southwest Iowa woman who was reported missing last month, were located earlier in the day Saturday, by volunteer searchers, and the family was notified. 20-year-old Kaylee Birt had been missing since April 4th. The Shenandoah native was last seen at a gas station/convenience store in Fields Station, OR.
She had been driving 1,600 miles from Klamath Falls, OR to Shenandoah. Her car was found April 6th in a remote part of Harney County, where a road has washed out. Birt was not in her vehicle. The search for Kaylee had previously been suspended April 11th, after an extensive search by land and air over the rugged southeast Oregon terrain failed to turn up any sign of the woman. Birt was listed as a missing person in the law enforcement data system. Signage was posted near her last known location, informing visitors to the area to be vigilant of any potential evidence.

They must have heard you--it now says 29.

but then also why does it say remains of a SW IA woman are found in Oregon? I mean maybe originally perhaps IA but she was living in OR supposedly at time. Smh, sounds worse I guess or some such.
