OK Searching for my missing father STEPHEN MURPHY: Missing from Tulsa, OK - 2 May 1976 - Age 19

Searching for my father, Stephen Lee Murphy. No one had seen or heard from him 1976. No missing person report was filed until I filed one July 2022. Last anyone had contact with him he was 19 years old. He served in the Marine Corps from 1975-1984 when he was discharged out for AWOL and Misconduct. I tried to get his OMPF with no luck. Detective out of Tulsa Oklahoma is awaiting their request for his military file. If anyone knows him or has had any contact with him, I would appreciate knowing. I appreciate any help and suggestions. Thank you all so much

Well, it would seem then when he went missing, he'd not want to be found. Do you know if the "capture" story is even true, whether the further escape story is or not, or did he just go AWOL and never was seen again? That's key I think and makes a huge difference of whether he just went missing in '76 never to be seen again or was captured and went missing again and actually escaped.

Again, I don't see them actively hunting someone for doing that. Maybe to a point of trying to determine if okay, family notified perhaps, seeing if he can be easily found with last known whereabouts but not some active search and capture kind of thing... I guess I don't know but further would surprise me.

It's not an easy thing to say but I would not dismiss something happened to him there and they claim he went AWOL/missing. It wouldn't be the first time such has happened or where they just don't "investigate" their own or something happening on base...

On the other hand, if you are AWOL and IF you were caught and escaped in cuffs the next time, you are not going to use your identity nor your SSN, I mean we are talking govt. both with military, the SSN, etc. and if he thought he was in trouble and at such a young age, you certainly would think such imo and he would be in trouble, I don't mean he wouldn't, just how big of trouble or danger, that's more up in the air.

Again key is if he went missing in '76 and was never seen again or was captured and supposedly escaped again. It still would be around the same time period I'd imagine but the depth of trouble he may have thought himself in or if he was never seen again after the AWOL thing or after a capture and escape...

Was he on approved leave when he went AWOL? Or just left base and never came back? Because something simply could have happened to him then. I understand you may not know, just asking in the event you do.

Purposely going AWOL versus something just happened to him and no one knows if something did and so he never came back would lead to different thoughts depending on which. For example, if I was in the military and went out for a night's drinking off base and was allowed to do so, and got into a bar fight and someone killed me and threw me into a river, I did not go AWOL voluntarily. But if I left when I was not supposed to or it is known he intentionally himself did not come back, that changes the direction I'd look at this.

Again, not so fresh on the details but don't recall there being a lot known so you may not know. Just putting it out there.
He went AWOL multiple times but always returned. According to the military records I was able to acquire November 1976 they listed him as a deserter. I do believe something happened to him. I recieved a picture of him, my mom ,and I, he looked happy

I sent email about it but no response
Did you ever send your DNA to the DOE network to match against this John Doe found in California ? This is a very likely possibility as the timing is right. He was found in Sept '76 and appears to have been dead for 4 months, which appears to match the actual timing of when your father went missing.

Does anyone here ever communicate or get answers from the Doe Network? I'd think they'd be interested in this possible match? So can help her get a response is what I mean?
My DNA has been submitted as reference sample to his Namus. He went AWOL/MISSING in 1976. He enlisted in 1975 right after graduation and his 18th birthday. Stationed in Camp Pendleton California. Military discharged him in 1984. He is not listed as a deserter either. So he isn't wanted by the military. His fingerprints have been ran and nothing shows up. His SSN hasn't had activity on it either.
I'm looking back because of the recent conversation about this man that should be at least looked at to see if a match.

Not all the way back, just these recent posts and see that your DNA is only with NAMUS, not the Doe Network nor LE? I'm not sure how it all works but my guess is they don't share such and each would need it?

Others here I am sure know more on that...

If he went AWOl mutliple times but always returned and continued serving, then clearly consequences were not intolerable and that makes it even harder to believe the story about capture and handcuffs... And then a further escape in handcuffs...? Do you lean towards thinking that is true or no?

But then they did list him as a deserter so maybe at a point, it got more serious.

OR something happened to him and that's being withheld even if suspected.

If he looked happy in a picture that I bet you value very much, it would seem he was not wanting to abandon family necessarily. I can't recall the specifics, were your folks together with you as a family at this time? When he went missing?

I am sure I read it when I first followed and apologize for not recalling. I was thinking not but not claiming my recall is right.

Apparently they did not respond which I don't get at all. But maybe the email cycled into junk if it was from a Gmail address or some such. Most business and professionals know to check that once in awhile to see they didn't miss something important but it does happen.

Maybe trying a phone call would result in a response?

Anyone know or have ever contacted the Doe Network?

My understanding was that she was still waiting for a response.
Yes, i think she only got partial info. Perhaps @Snoangel26 can confirm for us and definitely the Doe Network needs to check her DNA against this apparently murdered person found buried in the Californian hills. He certainly did not bury himself.

ETA maybe it would be best to contact LE in the jurisdiction where the body was found. They would have it on their records as an unsolved murder.

The Doe network is suppose to update the DNA pending. Tulsa PD collected my DNA and sent it to NAMUS

These are what I recieved from the military.
I am so bad at this, my options only allow me to make it smaller and not bigger. Can anyone here enlarge this? I can't see anything on it.

So they sent you two pages?

Do you think it possible his earlier AWOl things nothing too serious happened but then it was often enough he was warned the next time there'd be serious consequences? I can't see the records but you said he had been AWOL a number of times but always came back...

And I wonder what caused the AWOL many times. Was he partying and just irresponsible? Did he hate the structure and the rules and just want a break? Was something very wrong going on and he could not take it?

Have you ever tried to get news or some YT creator, etc. to take this up? I don't do FB but it does get word around, have you ever put it on there, etc. or find a group that would do so?

Just some thoughts.

I think maybe we should try to bump this one at least once every few weeks because I know I forgot some details until I saw recent posts on it again. Just a thought.

But the OP has stated him going AWOL (or maybe UA) was something he did often. I think maybe no one realized something might have really happened. :(
He disappeared in May '76 and had only been in since he graduated the previous year, so it was just a short period. How many times did he go AWOL and where had he been when he returned? Is that known ?
