William Tyrrell (born 26 June 2011) is an Australian boy who disappeared at the age of 3 from Kendall, New South Wales, on 12 September 2014. He had been playing at his foster grandmother's house with his sister, and was wearing a Spider-Man suit at the time of his disappearance.[2] Tyrrell is believed to have been abducted.[3][4][5][6]

Despite extensive investigations, as of 21 June 2019, five years after his disappearance, Tyrrell has not been found, or his abductor(s) identified. On 12 September 2016, two years after his disappearance, a reward of A$1 million was offered for the recovery of William and does not require the arrest, charging or conviction of any person or persons.[7]

William Tyrrell fifth anniversary of disappearance, questions on police handling

Today marks five years since William Tyrrell vanished without a trace from his foster grandmother's home, and questions are now being asked about a witness who claims to have seen him.

On September 12, 2014, about 10.15am, William went missing from the home in Kendall on NSW's mid north coast when he went to play in the yard.

Now, on the anniversary of the disappearance, police have launched a new hotline directly into the coroner's office, which is investigating.

But journalist Caroline Overington, who has closely followed the case and started the podcast Nowhere Child, has now spoken on William's foster mother publicly attacking police, saying they don't have any real leads.

"The investigation is now five years old and they don't have any real leads and there is no forensic evidence collected," she told Seven's Sunrise on Thursday.

"No trace of William has been found - not even a shoe or a hair or any sign that he was ever really here, and that is frustrating.

"But the police can't always tell you what they're doing.

"They always have something going on in the background."

In the beginning, I didn't even think the family was involved. Wow.

William Tyrrell’s foster mother charged with giving misleading evidence

The foster mother of missing child William Tyrrell provided a NSW Crime Commission hearing about the boy’s disappearance with false or misleading information, police have alleged.

On Thursday, detectives from strike force Rosann – which was established to investigate Tyrrell’s disappearance – issued a 56-year-old woman with a court attendance notice.

The woman – understood to be Tyrrell’s foster mother – will have her matter heard at Sydney’s Downing Centre local court on 24 May.

In a statement released on Thursday, NSW police said the woman was charged with knowingly giving false or misleading evidence.

Guardian Australia understands this occurred at a hearing before the NSW Crime Commission – a body that works alongside police to investigate serious crimes.

“She remains before the courts,” the police statement said. “Investigations under strike force Rosann continue.”

William Tyrrell’s foster parents facing trial for alleged assault on different child

The foster parents of William Tyrrell will face up to 10 prosecution witnesses and surveillance footage when a case unrelated to the missing Sydney boy goes to trial.

Evidence related to the prosecution of William’s foster parents over the alleged assault and stalking of another child, as well their identities, are not able to be published under a gag order seeking to protect the administration of justice.

The pair have entered not guilty pleas to charges of common assault and stalking.

On Friday, a brief mention at Hornsby Local Court was told that the matter would next be listed on May 13 at Parramatta, where a hearing date would be fixed.

EXCLUSIVE: The William Tyrrell foster mother files: Why the missing boy's female carer fought so hard to keep the truth secret - as wealthy couple faces court on child assault charges

William Tyrrell's foster mother fought to keep secret the truth about the missing toddler, arguing that revealing he was a foster child would intensify publicity and force her family into hiding.

The now 57-year-old was part of the court battle waged to keep a veil of secrecy over William's foster status in the years after he vanished without trace.

Daily Mail Australia has obtained an affidavit written by the foster mother two years after William vanished from her mother's house in the NSW Mid North Coast town of Kendall on September 12, 2014.

In the document designed to keep William's foster care past under wraps, the foster mother claimed disclosure 'will lead to intense interest from the public and a much larger number of people will learn William was in foster care'.

This was despite the fact the foster mother and father were actively engaged in the massive 'Where's William' publicity crusade with former lead detective Gary Jubelin.

Police informant to give evidence in trial of William Tyrrell's foster mother

A police informant will be called as a witness during a two-day court hearing for William Tyrrell's foster mother, who denies giving misleading or false information to the NSW Crime Commission.

The charges relate to evidence the 56-year-old gave during a hearing into William's disappearance from his foster grandmother's home.

William was last seen at the property at Kendall, on the NSW Mid-North Coast, in September 2014.

The foster mother, who cannot be identified, did not appear during a brief mention of her case at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court.

Police Prosecutor Amin Assaad told the court it would be a "voluminous" matter.

"We anticipate calling one witness, that's the police informant," he said.

The hearing will involve about 500 pages of evidence and transcript from the Crime Commission, and possibly some audio recordings of the commission, the magistrate was told.

Explosive new details emerge about William Tyrrell's foster parents as couple are accused of kicking a girl and hitting her with a wooden spoon

Explosive new details have surfaced about William Tyrrell's foster parents who are accused of grabbing a girl around the neck, kicking her, and hitting her with a wooden spoon.

The allegations have emerged after lawyers acting for Australian media organisations were successful in appealing a suppression order on the proceedings.

Until now, the media was forbidden to report on any of the allegations police will make against the couple after they were charged with the assault of the girl last November. The couple have pleaded not guilty to the alleged assault.

In November 2021, William's foster mother, referred to as SD, was charged with two counts of staking and intimidation and a further assault charge while William's foster father, referred to as JS, was charged with one count of stalking and intimidation.

A hearing scheduled for June 30 will decide if the charges laid against William's foster mother will be dealt with on mental health grounds.

According to a psychologist's report tendered as part of the appeal of the suppression order, the couple had been 'attempting to intervene in the (alleged) victim's problematic behaviour', The Australian reports.

The report refers to police facts from November 2021 which alleged SD kicked the girl and caused her 'pain and bruising' and allegedly hit her with a wooden spoon.

JS is alleged to have 'grabbed' the alleged victim's neck and physically restrained her following a 'time-out' period that lasted 44 minutes which concluded with the child telling the pair that she 'hated them'.

Police will allege the child yelled out in pain, with SD then alleged to have forced her to remain seated for an extended period of time.

Police will allege SD then kicked the girl causing her pain and bruising and forced her to sit down several times after she made attempts to stand up.

The report states police will allege the child pleaded with SD to let her go but instead received a 'tirade of verbal abuse' that lasted up to 15 minutes.

In additional facts provided by police it was alleged the girl expressed to her schoolteacher that she felt afraid to return home.

'Further, the facts note that SD suggests to the child that if the (child) was to defecate on the floor, she would rub the child's face in it,' the report states.

Great parenting and techniques to correct the "problem" behavior of the child. Yeah, it is the child with the problem. I don't think so.

This is one case from the start I never believed William was abducted and it "smelled" to me like the "parents". I'm sadly not surprised that they now have charges relating to another child.

Disgusting any were still in their care. Such a world this is sometimes. :(

Why is this just coming out now? Why didn’t they know this before?

William's 11th birthday marked by police

NSW police are marking what would have been the 11th birthday of William Tyrrell, as the force continues to attempt to crack the case of the missing boy.

A high-profile search for the body of the missing toddler in Kendall wrapped up last December without any obvious breakthroughs but detectives are not giving up.

"The NSW Police Force remains committed to finding William Tyrrell and investigations by the Homicide Squad's Strike Force Rosann are ongoing," the force said in a statement on Sunday.

"Strike force detectives are continuing to conduct interviews and other investigative activity, including those under Coronial Orders, as well as reviewing all material with the assistance of various experts."

A $1 million reward for information leading to William's recovery still stands.
