ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The suspect in the killing of three people in rural South Carolina hopped on a plane after the shootings and was arrested hours later. Jeffery David Powell, 36, was arrested at a hotel in Jacksonville, Florida, deputies said in a statement early Tuesday.

A man and two women were killed in the shootings Monday about 3 p.m. inside a Greenwood County home just off U.S. 25, Sheriff Dennis Kelly said. A child was also hurt in the shooting but managed to get out of the home and go to a neighbor who called 911

Deputies were still trying to determine what led to the shooting,“There’s a relationship there, but we’re still trying to get some of those details on how they know each other,” the sheriff said. Powell has a charge of breach of trust of between $2,000 and $10,000 pending in Greenwood County and was convicted of domestic violence in 2013 and 2014,

At about 5 a.m. today, Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox released the identities of those who were killed. They are Randy Grant Perkins, 56; Megan Lee Gale Dinkins, 30; and Shay Nicole Dinkins, 10. All were listed as residents of 101 Heddy Road.

Kelly said there was a relationship between Powell and the victims, but couldn’t release more information as of Monday night.

A Florida teen is behind bars after police say he beat a boy with special needs to near death and left him in the woods.

A little after midnight, police found the boy, naked and badly beaten, walking alone down off of Huggins Street in Lake County. Click Orlando reports that the child had a bruised, swollen face. His eyes were nearly shut from the swelling and he had bleeding from his mouth.

The victim quickly identified his aggressor as 16-year-old Matthew Kirby.

When officers arrived at Kirby’s home and questioned him, he readily admitted that he choked the victim to unconsciousness, according to the police. He also reportedly said his goal was to ultimately kill the victim.
