ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg police detectives are desperate to find a 2-year-old St. Petersburg boy whose mother was found dead in their northeast St. Pete apartment Thursday.

Taylen Mosley just turned 2 on March 12. He is now the subject of a statewide Amber Alert.

St. Petersburg chief of police Anthony Holloway said during a press conference Thursday evening that Taylen was last seen with his mother, 20-year-old Pashun Jeffery, around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday outside their Lincoln Shores apartment on 4th Street North.

"Our main concern is we need to find this two-year-old," Chief Holloway said.

Holloway said a neighbor came forward to report hearing "a commotion" coming from Jeffery's apartment on Wednesday night, but police were not called at the time.

"Earlier today, the family did not hear from the deceased, so they asked the apartment manager to come do a check on them," Chief Holloway said.

Detectives believe Jeffery was killed inside her apartment. Her body was found around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

The view from SkyFOX showed crime scene tape draped around a parking lot. The doors and trunk of a parked blue vehicle were open, with items sitting on the sidewalk behind it. Holloway confirmed the car belonged to Jeffery.

Police are not sure if Taylen was home at the time.

"That crime scene is very violent on the inside [of the apartment]," Chief Holloway said. "We want to find Taylen. That's our main goal right now… We just want to make sure the child is safe," Holloway said.

The chief asked any neighbor or nearby resident who has cameras or information that could help them find Taylen to come forward.

The chief said police have not spoken to Taylen's father, but they are sure Taylen is not with his father.

Taylen is described as a Black male who is 2 feet tall and weighs 30 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

If the police have not talked with his father but are sure the child is not with his father, I'd like to know how they can be sure of that. The only things i can think of is because he is in jail or out of the country or something like that where it just couldn't be the case.

Praying this child is found safe. With the mother dead, it is doubtful...

Police said the child isn’t with his father or any other family member, according to reports.

“No family member has [Taylen] that we can find. Even though we are investigating her murder, our first priority is to find Taylen,” Yolanda Fernandez, SPPD’s public information manager, told WFLA.

Officers searched a blue Nissan sedan in the apartment complex parking lot, removing items from the car, the Tampa Bay Times reported. They also searched a pond near Jeffery’s apartment and hauled away a trash dumpster to look through for evidence.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit brought a bloodhound to help with the search for the boy. Drones and helicopters are also being used in the search.

Anyone with information about Taylen’s whereabouts is asked to contact SPPD at 727-893-7780.

St. Pete police chief: Father of missing boy won't speak to detectives, in hospital due to cuts on arms, hands

The St. Petersburg mother of a missing toddler had been living at Lincoln Shores Apartments for about a month before she was found dead, her family told reporters Friday. Her 2-year-old boy was last seen Wednesday afternoon, prompting an Amber Alert.

"We just want to say that Taylen is a beautiful little boy. He’s really loving and caring. He’s just very sweet, and he’ll smile and laugh at everybody. Help us get Taylen back. Taylen lost his mommy, so Taylen needs his family."

They described the child's mother, Pashun Jeffery, as someone who always tried to make people smile. She liked to tell jokes and would try to rap for fun. Pashun was also outspoken.

Taylen's father – who has not been publicly identified by officials – was named a person of interest as of Friday morning. Police noted they do not believe the child is with him, and he is refusing to talk to detectives.

During a press conference, Chief Anthony Holloway provided new information in regard to the case's timeline.

March 29 at 5:20 p.m. – Taylen and Pashun were last seen at this time with his grandmother at Lincoln Shores Apartments.

March 29 at 8:30 p.m. – A neighbor – who came forward with this information the following day – heard a commotion in Pashun's apartment, but it wasn't immediately reported to police.

March 29 at 9:15 p.m.Taylen's father arrives at his own mother's home with cuts on his arms and hands. He admits himself into a hospital, where he remains at the moment.

"Nothing in our investigation leads us to believe he is a victim," explained Chief Anthony Holloway.

He said detectives do not know the origin of the wounds and are unsure if he lived at the apartment unit with Pashun and Taylen.

On the morning of March 30, Pashun's mom became suspicious, considering her daughter usually calls her every morning. At 2:30 p.m., Pashun's family contacts Lincoln Shores and requests a welfare check. The property manager entered the unit and found a "very violent crime scene," the chief said. Police were notified.

During the investigation, detectives learned Pushun had a child, Taylen, who was missing.

A media alert was released by St. Petersburg Police Department at 4:44 p.m. Officials reported Pashun's body was found that afternoon and her child was missing.

At 5:13 p.m., an Amber Alert was issued for Taylen.

Police searched Pashun's car on Thursday. The view from SkyFOX that day showed crime scene tape draped around a parking lot. The doors and trunk of her blue vehicle were open, with items sitting on the sidewalk behind it.

Later in the afternoon, a dumpster was hauled away by police

Chief Holloway said surrounding agencies have been brought in to assist: Dive teams from St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and Clearwater Fire Rescue; Pinellas County Sheriff's Office's aviation unit; Manatee County Sheriff's Office's K-9 team; along with detectives from FDLE and the FBI.

Detectives believe Taylen is in danger and has likely been missing for over 24 hours. Police are organizing a search party Saturday at 8 a.m. and are asking for volunteers.

Those interested can meet at a tent in the Winn-Dixie parking lot, located at 11100 4th Street North. Volunteers will be assigned teams with officers and given instructions on where to search. They are asking people to wear comfortable shoes, bring hats, sunscreen and water bottles.

What??? Hadn't talked to dad but certain child wasn't with him. Now he is a POI in moom's death but toddler not with father. Do we have two fathers here or what is this?

I wouldn't think he could be a POI of mom if he was incarcerated so that goes out the window as a possibility unless he hired someone...

According to the arrest affidavit, Mosley celebrated his 21st birthday at 20-year-old Pashun Jeffery’s apartment Wednesday.

After the party ended, he showed up at his mother’s house with severe cuts on his arms that police say were caused by slippage during a knife attack.

The next day, Jeffery’s body was found inside her apartment with more than 100 stab wounds.

“For something like this that’s so gruesome, the impact those images and the autopsy report and photographs are going to have on that jury is going to be monumental,” criminal defense attorney Bryant Camareno said.

Police said they linked the deaths to Thomas Mosley through a bloody fingerprint on a cleaning bottle and a bloody shoe print with a Gucci emblem.

Camareno shed some light on what this case will look like in a courtroom.

“I analyzed the affidavit and looked at it from a defense perspective,” he said. “Short of any mental health issues, insanity, incompetency, I’d be hard-pressed to find a defense.”

He said it will likely take about two years before this case goes before a jury.

<snip>
“If I were his lawyer, I would want to try to resolve this short of a trial, short of the death penalty, maybe offer life, maybe offer 50 years as a sentence to the prosecutor,” Camareno explained. “50 years is pretty much a life sentence, but it’s not the same as capital punishment [which would] drag this out for another 20 years.”
