The mother of 2-year-old Noah Tomlin of Hampton has been arrested as federal, state and local authorities continue their search for the young boy. Hampton Police Chief Terry Sult announced the arrest of 34-year-old Julia Tomlin.

Julia Tomlin’s trial had been scheduled to start Monday, The Daily Press reported. But Althea Mease, a public defender representing Tomlin, said in a brief hearing in Hampton Circuit Court that for “a number of reasons,” she wanted a competency hearing first.

Prosecutors didn’t object, the newspaper reported. The hearing is now scheduled for May 20.

Judge rules Julia Tomlin is fit to stand trial in son Noah’s death

The mother of 2-year-old Noah Tomlin is fit to stand trial in connection with his death, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney Anton Bell confirmed to 10 On Your Side that Julia Tomlin was determined to be “sane enough to stand trial” during her mental examination. She is charged with second degree murder, felony child neglect and concealment of a dead body.

Tomlin’s trial was supposed to begin in March, but was delayed when defense attorneys requested the psychological evaluation.

Tomlin is due back in court on July 16 to set a new trial date.

Murder trial delayed in case against Noah Tomlin’s mother, who is accused of killing Hampton toddler in 2019

The murder trial of a Hampton woman charged with killing her toddler in 2019 will be delayed by at least two months.

Julia L. Tomlin, 36, is charged with second-degree murder and other counts in the death of her 2-year-old son, Noah, whose body was found 10 days after she reported him missing.

Tomlin’s attorney, Hampton Deputy Public Defender Dan Mazzio, asked for the delay on Monday, saying he and Assistant Public Defender David Anderson were just appointed to the case about three weeks ago and need more time to prepare.

Judge removes Hampton Public Defender’s Office from Julia Tomlin case

A Hampton judge has removed two public defenders who have been representing a mother charged with murdering her toddler in 2019.

Circuit Court Judge Michael Gaten ordered the Hampton Public Defender’s Office off the Julia Tomlin case last week following a motion by Hampton’s top prosecutor who accused the office of dragging its feet.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Anton Bell asked Gaten to replace — and impose sanctions on — the defense lawyers after they asked that a trial scheduled for later this month be postponed, even on the heels of prior delays.

“This is procrastination — at best,” Bell said he told Gaten at the hearing. “We’ve been prepared each time to go forward. We want — the community wants — some resolution of this case.”

Though Gaten declined to hand down sanctions, he removed Hampton Deputy Public Defender Dan Mazzio and Assistant Public Defender Dave Anderson from the case after hearing from both sides.

“The judge said that (Julia Tomlin) has a constitutional right to have prepared counsel,” Bell said this week. Gaten appointed Tyrone Johnson, a Hampton lawyer in private practice, to take over Tomlin’s defense.
