2-year-old child missing in southwest Houston, HPD says

The child’s mother said she went inside an apartment for a few minutes while the child was playing outside. When the mother returned, the child was missing.

HPD has been on the scene since at least 9 a.m. Investigators drained the fields and combed the fields near the apartment.

The department has not ruled foul play out. They are currently interviewing the mother and father.

There are no suspects at this time, according to HPD.

Just now seeing this. Not another baby. Wow, good for them, they have Texas Equusearch immediately involved. Her name makes me think of another Texas child named Maleah (spelled differently), Tim Miller helped find her and helped crack that case... Her stepdad had a hokey story from the start (supposed stepdad).

I hope there are no other similarities in case than name and Equusearch and Texas, no reason to think there is, it just rings those bells with me with the name and all.

Prayers for this baby and her family/loved ones.

Darn it! I checked this a.m. for news, saw none and was still hoping, not that there seemed to be much reason for any.

Another drowning... Lots of them lately. Well we know she did not wander 15 miles on her own... Now as to who saw her at the playground if anyone, cameras, etc. I hate saying things like this but if it was a stranger abduction, there will likely be sexual assault of a child. If not, I would be thinking someone known to her.

I wonder how they found her or knew where to look if it was that far away... Unless it was a waterway from where she lived... Nothing seems to indicate that this far.

I just mapped 5200 Carrolton Court and Lane (both are options) and it is 30 miles or so to Bray's Bayou so something is wrong with that info in the article. I could find no street. Still going to go look from home address to there...

Heck in looking at the map, not even sure the "bayou" is a water place... May be just a name.

So.... Someone dumped her or put her there... There is interstate access right there or close... So either someone jumped on there and got the hec* out of Dodge or someone wants others to think that... Imo thus far...

They found her somehow so they had something to go on, from someone... Or from cameras... Again imo.

Yeah definitely not an accident. Now the real question is, was she actually abducted?

Investigators said a woman was jogging in near the bayou when she spotted the child. A dive team was called out to recover the child, who was pronounced dead.

The chief added it's to early to officially confirm it's Maliyah. Acevedo says he's holding on to hope until the child's identity is confirmed by medical examiners.

At this point in the investigation, Acevedo said they suspecting foul play and the case is being investigated as a murder.

The chief said it's too early to confirm it is Maliyah but "most likely" it is her.

"We believe that although we can't confirm it's her, we believe there's a high probability of it being her," Acevedo said. "We don't want to give people false hope. We want to hold on to a little hope, but we want to prepare for the worse."

For now, the police department is conducting a murder investigation. No charges have been filed and officers are still searching for leads.

"We really believe this is foul play," the chief said.

Acevedo asked residents and businesses owners anywhere between Beechnut and the bayou check their camera systems. They're looking for any suspicious activity within the past 24 hours, he said.

"If you seen any suspicious vehicles, if you've seen any suspicious persons, in the past 24 hours plus, from 9:30 a.m. or even before 9:30 a.m...just call us right away," Acevedo said.

This is very interesting in that they are talking about water ways, streams that feed in and so forth and yet they seem to know this is foul play/murder. Which to me means she did not just fall in on her own and float from the address given nor was carried down... Unless someone put her there... And even then, it sadly suggests the way she was found and her condition tells them something...

I also like how he says you NEVER assume anyone especially a child is just an accident, you look at everything else first (paraphrasing)--in some cases I don't feel like they do that at all... Imo--but all should...

How sad. I feel like I say these words over and over. I don't know whether to wish for a stranger or someone she knew... And that in and of itself is tragic.

My mapping skills are not great but I found no reason to think she could be carried like down stream from the address given to where she ended up... However, I don't know the area and maybe there is flooding or something... I see no water ways to speak of between where she disappeared and ended up... Probably me or the map. Even if she did "float" down they are saying foul play. I guess however if someone thought they could stage such a thing, we have seen a few lately that that was the outcome or determination when found downstream by miles. I can think of two recent ones that that was the outcome or determination... Did someone think that would work?

They know more than they are saying... They always do but it is very clear I think in this one.

RIP innocent little child. Prayers to those that loved you and are devastated.

the Bayou runs close-ish to the last reported place seen, I don't see a toddler making it there on her own at 930 am and nobody seeing an unaccompanied toddler wandering that way. It would be an all terrain trek if there was no flooding. If there was flooding at the time, it would be possible, which I am not seeing any evidence of at the moment.

This article has a lot more info than I had seen. The chief says it is very unlikely she went down the water way from there... The caption under the grandma says she is an adopted grandma. And this 21 year old man is a boyfriend not her father who has been with the mother for four months. Finally, he said the child was upset he broke her toybox... Worth reading.

I did note when seeing the PC this weekend that the chief first said to check video cams if on the bayou, etc. businesses and residences, etc. for the last 24 hours and as he talked, he slipped in the remark of or the past 36 hours, etc...

No opinion am I offering but it appears all is being looked at and nothing is cleared...

And unless I am confused, is this not the same man who portrayed himself as her father? Note in the article the child's mother is comforting HIM. Don't get me wrong perhaps they are innocent and devastated but shouldn't he be comforting HER/the mother? He's only been in her life for four months...

Just like in most cases, I am waiting to hear of the last independent sighting of this child and where it was and when and if there was anyone who saw her at the playground with her bag of blocks...

The other thing that bothers me is so many copycats like whoever tried the hot car death recently when the child had been abused and killed prior... This one right here is reminiscent of two cases recently that they did put down to the child/ren having floated or been taken downstream naturally after falling in... It sounds staged to me, sorry using some recent scenarios... Of course, that still does not mean it couldn't have been a stranger or other friend, neighbor, who knows... I know where my thoughts are going though and leaning...
