For more than six months, a group of elementary and middle school students from the Round Rock school district have been meeting to build robots. But they don’t just want to win their next competition — they want to use their tech skills to save lives.
The Shadow Breakers, a robotics team made up of five fifth and sixth graders, are developing an app that could help law enforcement save more lives during a mass shooting.
The app, SafeExit, helped the students win first place in a FIRST LEGO League competition in February. On Saturday, they are taking their project to regionals.
The boys said they were inspired to create the app after learning about the 2018 shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students died.
“Now we feel like there will be a solution (for school shootings) because they are happening in our lifetime,” said Ishaan Sampat, one of the team members.
