Wisconsin :(

Baraboo is in the pretty well known Wisconsin Dells area. Not that that means anything.

Water parks, casino, tourist trap, very busy area in the summer and on the 4th although not sure how Covid has affected that. Just a basic overview of the area.

I hope number one that she is not with someone she met online or a "tourist".

Ten years old??? That is a baby. Suicidal? I hope word comes soon that she is safe.

As stated before, I am no map link expert. But just a map of the 1100 block of 12th Street Baraboo shows a very large park near them. Steinhorst. Looking further. She is 10 for goodness sakes, she can't drive or anything.

My biggest concern is if she vented her unhappiness, loneliness, thoughts, etc. online...

Other big concern is pills and suicidal?? She is TEN. I can't get past that.

One all nighter out hiding somewhere I would think would be enough for a ten year old to come running home. Man, I just cannot believe a ten year old would do that but I guess I am just not with the times. They deal with so much these days at such a young age...

A 10 year old with free access to pills? I think i need more info on this part, by itself. Was it her Rx? Parents? or was it OTC meds?
I just started to wonder about this too. Where did she get them? How do they know she has them or they are missing? I am up with the times on that much. Heck 15 years ago my stepson was telling us what he could sell a painkiller for in junior high... Lock em up or flush them if not going to use...

About 15 years ago the 11 year old son of a guy I went out with a couple of times started coming over with a couple of his friends. I swear, ALL these kids were on Ritalin or Adderal. They stole pain meds from their parents, they had Vicodin, Fiornal (a headache medicine containing barbiturates among other things), and stuff I hadn't even heard of. I was beyond shocked at how young they were while abusing all these drugs. Sadly, drugs don't seem that hard for kids to get...

It's extremely sad. I should clarify my remark above too. My stepson never took nor did such a thing, he was simply that open with us about what went on in middle school (and likely younger) and how many did do such things, sell or take such things. I have long known the adult part of it as well. Don't trust a single soul in your home alone in a bathroom with your medicine cabinet... Anyone who thinks it is only the liquor cabinet that needs to be locked up is way out of touch with the times...

Still, ten years old??? Wow.

Your story Gar is a great point and not hard to believe of how young these days such things go on and as you said, this was some years back.

Here is what I think is more info than we had. It sounds like they had not lived in Baraboo long, the mother had tight control of her social media, mom had just had a video chat with her at 4 p.m. and she seemed excited about a trip to Minocqua (northern WI) they had planned, arrived home from work one-half hour later and she was gone. Shoeless as well. Sounds like mom is quite heartbroken and cooperative. Hints of possible bullying with the girl (other children I take it). It is an updated article with the fact that she was found but the rest is mostly prior but with more details than I previously had read. Were still determining what meds she may have taken it sounded like.

So heartbreaking, so young.

Tragic death of Baraboo 10-year-old spurs talk of youth mental health

The investigation into the official cause of death of Baraboo 10-year-old Kodie Dutcher continues. Dutcher was found in a field near her house after she was missing for 19 hours.

The Baraboo Police Department reports Kodie left a note threatening self-harm, and her family believes she took pills.

Wednesday morning the Baraboo Police Chief Mark Schauf thanked the community on Facebook for their help in the search for Kodie. Chief Schauf reminded everyone to "care for each other" as they work to move on.

Police said her tragic death opens the discussion of mental health for kids and teens.

"Something like this, obviously puts mental health front and center for everyone," Baraboo Police Lt. Ryan LaBroscian said.

LaBroscian said one of the ways community members can "care for each other" involves talking to kids and teens about their feelings.

“For Wisconsin, 15.7% of high school aged youths considered suicide, 7.4% of them attempted suicide.” Robin Matthies, Department of Health Services Public Health Trauma and Resilience program manager said. “Adults should ask them if they are having thoughts of suicide or thinking about killing themselves.”

Local mental health professionals say thoughts of suicide are happening at younger ages.

“Those at middle and elementary schools, I’m constantly asking them if they’re seeing an uptick in mental health issues with our younger folks and they shake their heads ‘yes,’” Gregg Curtis, Department of Instruction School Counseling and Suicide Prevent Consultant said.

These experts agree that bringing awareness to youth suicide prevention is one way to break down barriers and strengthen communities.

"Everyone needs to keep an eye on for each other and keep an eye on for their loved ones and talk to each other," Lt. LaBroscian said.

Authorities are waiting for the coroner’s report before an official cause of death is determined.

You can find more resources online from the Department of Instruction and the Department of Health Services.

The phone number to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 800-273-TALK (8255). You can also text “HOPELINE” to 741741.
