New Canaan mom Jennifer Dulos is missing: Here’s what we know

Fotis Dulos, 51, is the estranged husband of Jennifer Dulos, 50. She has been missing since May 24, 2019. Fotis Dulos operates a building company, The Fore Group. He has built custom homes in Fairfield and Litchfield counties and the Farmington Valley. In her initial divorce filing, Jennifer Dulos described her husband’s affinity for water skiing, which she characterized as an “obsession.” She said he insisted on their children training to be world-class water skiers, and had them on a strict training regimen that she believed was dangerous and excessive, and sometimes would go on from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Jennifer Dulos Disappeared Two Years Ago Today

“Monday, May 24, marks the two-year milestone of the disappearance of Jennifer Farber Dulos, an extraordinary woman, a devoted mother and daughter, a brilliant writer, a true friend. We are moved by the continued interest in Jennifer’s case and by the concern for her children and family, all of whom are thankfully healthy and well,” a statement from Carrie Luft, issued on behalf of the family and friends of Jennifer Farber Dulos, says.

Through a movie and a documentary titled, "Gone Mom: The Disappearance of Jennifer Dulos" and "Beyond the Headlines: The Jennifer Dulos Story," respectively, the film projects will examine Dulos’ vanishing without a trace after the mother of five was last seen arriving at her New Canaan home on May 24, 2019.

The double-feature centered on Dulos’ disappearance will air on Saturday, June 5 at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.

Governor Signs ‘Jennifer's Law,' Expanding Definition of Domestic Violence in Conn.

A domestic violence bill coined "Jennifer's Law" in honor of missing New Canaan mother Jennifer Dulos has been signed into law by Gov. Ned Lamont.

The law, which was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this month with a 134-8 vote, expands the definition of domestic violence in state law to include "coercive control." This means that threatening, humiliating, or intimidating acts that harm a person and deprive them of their freedom will now be considered domestic violence, according to officials.

The bill, SB 1091, will establish a new program to provide legal representation for domestic violence victims who file restraining orders. Those who file restraining orders will also be faced with a more efficient process, with the capability to email marshals the forms needed to serve them. Previously, forms needed to be hand-delivered to the courthouse.

Victims of domestic violence will also now be allowed to testify remotely in court proceedings for matters such as restraining orders, protective orders, or standard criminal protective orders.

The bill requires that a safe place be provided to victims of family violence in all court locations built after July 1, 2021.

Judge approves deal to silence Norm Pattis on Jennifer Dulos case for 40 years

A probate judge approved a settlement with the estate of Fotis Dulos Tuesday that would require his former criminal defense attorneys Norm Pattis and Kevin Smith to not discuss the case surrounding the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos for 40 years.

The family of Jennifer Dulos was hoping to avoid more publicity, said Attorney Christopher Hug, who negotiated the settlement as the administrator of the estate of Fotis Dulos.

“The heirs of the estate were very concerned about confidentiality,” Hug told Probate Judge Evelyn Daly. “They were satisfied.”

Several new laws went into effect today

New laws went into effect on Friday, Oct. 1.

Jennifer's Law

Jennifer’s Law, named after missing mother Jennifer Farber Dulos of New Canaan, expands the definition of domestic violence to include nonviolent coercive control.

“Coercive control was happening long before we passed this law,” said Megan Scanlon, executive director for the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

A mother of five children, Dulos was last seen in May of 2019. Before her disappearance, she was embattled in a bitter divorce with her husband, Fotis Dulos, that included allegations of financial manipulation and verbal abuse.

Scanlon said coercive control is when “the abuser establishes patterns of financial control, isolation, intimidation.”

That’s wonderful! I hope more states follow suit.

That's great news. I suppose the law is just their state? It should be law everywhere...

Search resumes in Connecticut for missing mother Jennifer Dulos

Authorities in Connecticut resumed their search Monday for Jennifer Dulos, a mother believed to have been murdered by her late husband.

Detectives searched an area of Waveny Park in New Canaan Monday, following up on previous information in the case.

After debt, no money left in Fotis Dulos estate for children, court documents show

Nearly two years after his death, the estate of Fotis Dulos has been declared insolvent, meaning most creditors, including his mother-in-law, will not get paid and there will be no money left for his five children, court documents show.

“He was a fellow who had lots of debts and no assets,” said attorney Richard Weinstein, who represented Gloria Farber in two lawsuits she won against her son-in-law. “I feel very badly we were unable to recover more for the family.”

While Fotis Dulos’ estate has $395,687 in assets, it owes $548,280.75 in expenses, according to Farmington Probate Court records.

Attorney Christopher Hug will be paid $189,525 for settling the estate and attorney Paul Knierim, who represented Hug, will receive $98,326, court documents show.

It is unlikely that any creditors will be paid beyond the two attorneys, nearly a dozen professionals who provided services to Hug to deal with the estate, and state and federal taxes owed by Fotis Dulos, court documents show.

If I were the attorneys, I would give some back to the kids. That’s just me, though.
Not that it is fair but I'm sure they are the grandmother's only heirs. Also this is only dad's estate, does that include what the mother would have had? Since they were in divorce proceedings, maybe there is nothing there either and he was causing financial damage but she is the one that came from wealth.

So dad gave them nothing really and only took away. He killed their mother and was financially irresponsible, leaving them to be raised by grandma and provided for by her as well. Nasty man.

Troconis attorney: ‘Thousands of pages’ of evidence from Dulos disappearance turned over to defense

Prosecutors have now turned over “thousands of pages” of investigative materials related to the death and disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, an attorney for defendant Michelle Troconis said during a hearing Tuesday.

Jon Schoenhorn, Troconis’ attorney, said that the documents appeared to include forensic evidence that he sought for months from prosecutors in an effort to defend Troconis against charges of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with evidence in relation to the disappearance of Dulos, a New Canaan mother of five.

Troconis has pleaded not guilty to each of the charges. She appeared remotely Tuesday for a court hearing in front of Stamford Superior Court Judge Gary White.

“I’m hoping and assuming it will be what I asked for,” Schoenhorn told White when asked whether the documents satisfied his requests for materials.

Schoenhorn added that the documents totaled roughly two gigabytes of information, which he had only begun “flipping through” after the materials were sent electronically within the last week.

What happened to Jennifer Dulos? Tuesday marks 3 years since New Canaan mom vanished

This week will mark three years since the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, who vanished after dropping off her five children at school.

While the 50-year-old mother has never been found, investigators said she is presumed dead based on evidence of a serious assault that occurred in the garage of her New Canaan home in May 2019.

On Saturday night, CBS’ “48 Hours” featured, “What Does the Other Woman Know? The Disappearance of Jennifer Dulos.” The episode, which originally aired in February 2021, focused on Troconis and included an interview with her family.

As Tuesday marks three years since the disappearance, here are six things to know about the case:

The cases against Troconis and Mawhinney continue to move through the courts, but neither seem close to any resolution.

Troconis will appear for a remote hearing on June 7, while Mawhinney’s case is waiting to be scheduled for trial.

Prosecutors have said Mawhinney could testify against Troconis if her case goes to trial.

Fotis Dulos asked friend to make ‘alibi call’ morning Jennifer Dulos vanished, search warrant shows

Fotis Dulos texted a close friend in Greece, asking him to make “a planned alibi call” the morning his estranged wife disappeared, according to a search warrant obtained by federal authorities in October 2020.

The brief call made by Andreas Toutziaridis around 8:30 a.m. on May 24, 2019 placed him at the center of Connecticut’s largest investigation in recent history and prompted federal authorities to examine his potential role in the death and disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, court documents showed.

Special Agent Craig Bowling with the Department of Homeland Security was looking for any evidence that Toutziaridis participated in federal crimes, including interstate domestic violence, obstruction of justice, aiding and abetting and conspiracy from Feb. 1, 2019 to June 25, 2019 when he sought the federal search warrant, court documents said.

Bowling requested that his affidavit, explaining why he wanted the search warrant, the search warrant and any other federal warrants be sealed to “protect the integrity of the investigation.” The warrant was served, but the case was closed by acting Connecticut U.S. Attorney Leonard Boyle on Nov. 12, 2021 without an arrest, the document said.

Toutziaridis and his attorney could not be reached for comment.

The search warrant, obtained by Hearst Connecticut Media Group, is now part of the defense for Michelle Troconis whose attorney Jon Schoenhorn is seeking any evidence that other suspects were considered, but not charged in the case.

Schoenhorn’s client, who was Fotis Dulos’ live-in girlfriend at the time of the disappearance, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution charges.

Attorney Kent Mawhinney, a close friend of Fotis Dulos, has also pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit murder.

Toutziaridis was added to the list after an examination of Fotis Dulos’ cellphone revealed the two had been in contact in the hours before the disappearance, the search warrant said.

Bowling and other federal agents seized Toutziaridis’ phone when he entered the U.S. on June 25, 2019 at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to stay with his friend Fotis Dulos, court documents said.

A review of his phone revealed that Fotis Dulos had called his friend the day before the disappearance, but Toutziaridis didn’t answer, court documents stated.

Fotis Dulos texted Toutziaridis at 10:30 p.m. that night, instructing his friend “to call the following day — May 24, 2019 — at 3:30 p.m, his time in Greece, which would be 8:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time in Connecticut,” the search warrant said.

On the morning of May 24, 2019, Mawhinney and Troconis were in Fotis Dulos’ office at his Farmington home in an effort to establish an alibi for him while he was in New Canaan, police have said in arrest warrants.

Fotis Dulos’ cellphone was left in the office and rang at 8:26 a.m., arrest warrants stated. Troconis answered the phone, but claimed the connection was “poor” and the call failed after a few seconds, arrest warrants said.

Toutziaridis then made a calendar entry in his device in Greek that was translated to “telephon(ed) Fotis,” the search warrant said. The entry was for 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, the court document said.

“Based on my training and experience, and participation in this investigation, I believe the entry about speaking to ‘Fotis,’ was a false entry, made in an attempt to conspire with (Fotis) Dulos to create an alibi for him,” Bowling wrote in the search warrant.

Police believe Fotis Dulos was “lying in wait” for his estranged wife at her New Canaan home when she returned from dropping off their children at school around 8 a.m. that day.

While Troconis and Mawhinney were in his office in Farmington, arrest warrants said Fotis Dulos was likely trying to clean up after attacking his estranged wife in the garage of her New Canaan home, arrest warrants said.

The amount of blood and evidence of a cleanup indicated Jennifer Dulos would not have survived the attack without immediate medical intervention, according to the state medical examiner’s office.

Almost two hours after he made the call to Fotis Dulos’ cellphone, Toutziaridis sent a video to his friend and two other people through WhatsApp, the search warrant said. The video, which investigators believe is a meme available online, shows a man who is asked a question by a woman off camera, the search warrant said.

“All right, you have two choices: A, you can live the rest of your life with your wife, or B...” the woman says in the video, according to the search warrant.

The man then interrupts and yells “B,” before the video abruptly ends, the search warrant said.

What do we think we’ll see, when one of the two co-conspiritors goes to trial? It’s starting to sound like there might be some incriminating things found on some cell phones; I wonder if there was anything on MT’s phone? Could there be some evidence of travel plans for 8 people, to happen immediately after the time Dulos was to have picked up his children? Any possibility that “Tout” contributed to more than just the “alibi phone call”?

I'll be surprised if they find the body before trial.

Burned body found in New Canaan park; No Dulos connection: Police

The death of a person in a New Canaan park has been called a likely suicide after emergency crews found a body on fire Wednesday evening.

Around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, emergency crews were called to a fire at the town mulch pile on Lapham Road, which is across the street from the entrance to Waveny Park.

When officers approached the site of the fire, they saw it was a body on fire. Fire crews put out the fire. The New Canaan Fire Marshal's office was on the scene as well, said police.

The New Canaan Police said they were investigating along with the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police said in a press release, "It appears that this incident is isolated is not at all connected to the Jennifer Dulos case. Preliminary evidence does support that this incident is most likely a suicide."

Jennifer Dulos' Chevy Suburban was found in Waveny Park the day she was last seen alive, May 24, 2019.
