A 22-year-old New York woman who documented her cross-country van road trip on social media was reported missing by her mother on Saturday after her fiancé returned to their home in Florida without her, reports said.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on their road trip on July 2 from Blue Point, New York, Newsday reported.
The two were living in a 2012 Ford Transit van and documenting their travels on Instagram and YouTube, often using the hashtag #vanlife.
Petito was last seen checking out of a hotel with Laundrie on August 24. She last spoke to her family on the phone the next day, telling them she had arrived at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said.

Her mother told reporters on Monday that she FaceTimed with Petito around August 23 or 24.
Petito's most recent Instagram post was shared on August 25.

Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday that she was unsure whether her daughter had left Grand Teton. She said she exchanged texts with Petito's number twice after August 25.
"I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text," Schmidt said. "I didn't verbally speak to her."
Laundrie eventually returned to the couple's home in North Port, Florida, without Petito, though it was not clear when he arrived, the Daily Mail reported.
The police in New York's Suffolk County said Schmidt filed a missing-person report on Saturday.

"Petito, 22, of Blue Point, is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds," the press release said. "She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads 'let it be.'"

The press release said authorities had recovered the couple's van during their investigation.
Petito and Laundrie had been living in North Port together for two years before they set out on their road trip, the Daily Mail said. Petito announced their engagement on Instagram in July 2020.

She could be anywhere as they were traveling cross-country. I put the location as the last place her family could verify that she was still in communication.

If it's a letter to try and mend fences with her son, why the BURN AFTER READING at the end?
Exactly. There wouldn't be that need would there? In fact if it was done to show her son how much she loves him, she'd want the opposite, it to have meaning to him and he would feel her love so deeply he would keep it as a memento wouldn't he...?

It doesn't fly. Doesn't wash. Does NOT compute.

I felt for them some and I do think online types and others staking out their house and going crazy online with the stupidest shi*t was so not okay. But I was not okay with their decision to not respond to the Petitos when they were frantic about Gabby and lawyering up. Right there shows a lot. While I don't agree with it, I can even understand them loving their son, or being put in a hard position by his actions, and more BUT they made the wrong decision, at least she did.

She is right up there with Aidan Fucci's mother who washed his jeans. And she was charged. Roberta is darned lucky she isn't charged criminally or that maybe they don't have enough to show she or dad aided him after Gabby's murder but I have no doubt she did or would have, the letter shows that.

I wonder if she gets the fact that even though Brian knew she loved him and would do anything for him as she portrayed in this letter, bury a body, lie, etc., that he KNEW she had no such power to get him out of this one and the deeds he had done. I don't doubt up to a certain point he thought mommy could save him or get him out of his worst mess yet but I think he started to see the writing on the wall and even before that knew how bad it was as far as what he did...

MOST parents would do and defend their children to no end if they thought them innocent or something an accident, etc. That is where Roberta is different. Her very remark about helping to hide a body no matter when it was written shows that even if he murdered someone, she'd not blink an eye and would help him get out of it. Most parents would be devastated if they realized their child was guilty and it would break their hearts but they'd do the right thing or at least not help cover it up and be heartbroken facing their child going to prison or knowing they did such a thing.. She WOULD help cover it up and not blink and eye and she basically said as much.

RIGHT????!!!!! EVEN if that was true, was she suggesting something...?

Although I don't believe for one minute it is true. This letter was due to what happened, Gabby's murder.
If it was, it obviously wasn't mailed though and given to him afterwards, so how would she have helped bury the body that was already buried? I'm pretty sure it was prior since he seemed to go directly back to mommy after he killed her and that shows premeditation to me.

That's a good point but why if it was simply a professing of how deep her love and that she would do this and that for him or truly innocent, then why the "burn it" part after reading.

Maybe she was simply saying to him that had he asked she would have helped bury BUT how do we know when they found out she was in fact already buried? For all we know, Roberta may have thought Brian had her stashed somewhere or her body stashed somewhere and did need help disposing of her or so she may have wondered or thought... Then the file in the cake in case he was facing prison, etc., who knows if he shared all with mom and dad or not or when... He wouldn't have been facing prison prior to killing her or have need of that cake with a file...

Gabby wasn't found right away nor was Brian.

The fact the letter is undated makes anything possible but I think the facts fit better that it was after Gabby went missing... Roberta may well have been exploring and not known all and just said no matter what he did or what he needed, mommy would be there.

This says better than I can why this letter was very likely written after Gabby was murdered. I think/thought the same. Just listen to the first 15 minutes and it pretty much sums it up. I haven't gone further yet myself but am sure it goes on to cement it even more.

This isn't typical mom/son banter, this is in response to what happened and Brian being suicidal, distraught, knowing he is done for, etc.

Hidden True Crime the another night, should have shared it but just don't have the time right now to be on top of things, gave all the reasons this letter was after the murder. Linda gives her reasons here. Linda also says as I said above that IF it was before then an argument can be made there was a plan to kill Gabby. That's key to me as to why it was after among other things....
