Search continues for missing girl in WA

The disappearance of a four-year-old girl from a WA campsite is "extremely concerning" and police say a search has yet to turn up any answers.

Cleo Smith was last seen about 1.30am on Saturday at the Blowholes campsite on the coast at Macleod, north of Carnarvon.

An air, land and sea search resumed on Sunday morning with help from the SES and community volunteers.

The girl was wearing a pink one-piece sleepsuit with a blue and yellow pattern when she was last seen.

Earlier, Ms Smith posted that she had woken at 6am on Saturday to find her daughter wasn't in their shared tent.

She described Cleo's disappearance as "very very unusual".

WA police Inspector Jon Munday said the family arrived in the area late on Friday afternoon.

Insp Munday said he was "fairly confident" police were able to get the identities of all the people who were in the campsite at the time she disappeared, as well as gathering intelligence from dashcams and CCTV cameras in the vicinity to "paint a picture of who was around here".

"We are greatly concerned for the safety of Cleo and we aren't leaving anything to chance or ruling anything out," Insp Munday said early on Sunday afternoon.

"We are going as hard as we can for as long as we can."

Insp Munday said detectives from Perth and Geraldton had arrived at the search area and despite the harsh environment, the weather was so far "conducive to someone surviving exposure to the elements", but there were still no answers or major breakthroughs in the search.

We used to go camping and let the boys sleep in their own tents, but not until they were old enough to set the tent up themselves. The way the world is now, I probably wouldn’t do it again.
But definitely not at 4! Mine had their own tents at about the tween stage and their tents were right next to mine. I could still hear nearly every movement that was made.

Cleo Smith search: Expert says abductor ‘not likely to have planned snatch’

To catch a child abductor you have to understand the rare beast that is a child abductor, says a former senior detective who specialises in this type of abhorrent crime.

UK-based criminologist Dr Graham Hill said child abductions were mostly situational and opportunistic, as opposed to meticulously planned.

“Abductors react on the spur of the moment,” he said. “To stop child abduction, police need to understand child abductions, first and foremost. And understand how abductors work and why they work in the way they do.

“Very few child abductors plan their offences and once they’ve got a child, they very rarely keep them. Because to keep a child, you’ve got to keep them fed, you’ve got to keep them quiet and all of those things are really difficult to do.

Police turn attention to Cleo Smith’s family home

Police have undertaken a forensic examination of the family of home of Cleo Smith with the possibility someone had been scoping the WA property.

As the case focussed more heavily on suspected abduction, a forensic squad was seen dusting the fence and windows of the house in Carnarvon on Saturday.

Officers were also taking photos of sections of the fence.

The ABC reports officers were only gathering evidence on the outside of the property at this stage, with the possibility that someone had been scoping the house before Cleo’s disappearance.

I clicked on a headline and found why she was seen at 1:30 a.m. She asked for a drink of water.

A motion activated CCTV camera that caught her voice but not her? Odd. I guess her height could have been a reason maybe and yet something triggered it--if the motion was triggered by her then one would think it would also pick up a picture of her.

I wonder what time that was... And I wonder how they can verify that it is her voice. I'd also like to know what kind of shack it is that they record all coming and going from it. A "residence"? Toilets?

20 meters is over 60 feet away from the campsite then... Were the parents on video with her voice? They sure don't give much detail other than saying her voice was heard.

Cleo Smith disappearance: Police rule out theory family were victims of stalking

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Cleo Smith have ruled out a major line of inquiry, saying there is "no evidence" to suggest the 4-year-old or her family were victims of stalking before she vanished.

That doesn’t surprise me. If this is an abduction, usually children are abducted out of convenience.

Does anyone else get the Deorr Kunz vibe? Maybe it's just me.
Depends what you think about Deorr's case, really. A lot of people think his parents harmed him and he was never on that camping trip. I don't necessarily believe that's true. I believe there was some extreme negligence and he died from neglect (got into drugs?) or wandered away.

In Cleo's case, I'm honestly leaning toward actual abduction at this point.

I am watching something on this right now, there are a few covering the story a bit. I have not read every link so maybe it was known but it is the first I knew the police did not arrive until mid morning??? Unclear what time they were called (but apparently not too quickly)... I'm sorry but I am having trouble understanding that... This is a FOUR year old who was missing and they weren't at home and strangers were around, etc.

I just really don't get that... I can always see or understand parents first searching a bit in some situations and checking with neighbors, etc. but with a FOUR year old and again when camping and around others and strangers coming and going??

I was starting to think this might actually be an abduction (although not sold on it) but this bothers me greatly and I had no idea of this...

When the police got there apparently they were checking cars leaving, etc. but I mean honestly how many and who left in that time frame...? I mean already someone could have left before they realized she was missing but why wait that long after they know she is missing to call LE and for LE to get there?

It also said in an article or two that there was allegedly a four hour delay in calling police...

I can allow for media thinking since LE did not arrive until four hours later that they weren't called until four hours later and maybe having it slightly wrong but even if it was say three hours... I have to question this. Why???

I hate media. One thing says Isla's cot was right next to Cleo and then another says the baby was sleeping just meters away. Well a meter is three feet plus a bit and this is a tent so plural means at least six feet...(two meters)... I mean I get there are big tents and two room tents etc. but we hear same room and then I see meterS away...?

Trying not to judge here but...

"But by Tuesday afternoon, Cleo's mum and stepdad provided an UPDATE that offered the FIRST indication that it was more likely than not the four year old had been abducted." Well gee, let's wait until well after the fact...

This was due to them saying the zipper was how high. But what??? So the parents on Tuesday are the ones that indicated it was likely she had been abducted...??? They arrived at the campground on FRIDAY. This did not come out until TUESDAY? And then it is on the word of the parents?

I'm sorry but I have an opinion and I was kind of in the middle with a leaning just a wee bit one way and then was coming back to the middle until this... I am 65/35 that there is something REALLY off here...

Police have revealed they are yet to speak to everyone who was at the remote Western Australian campsite where Cleo Smith was last seen on the morning she went missing.

“We need to speak to every single person that was there, and we haven’t yet done so,” Deputy Police Commissioner Col Blanch said.

Car Seen Driving Away From Area on Same Day Parents Report 4-year-old Missing From Campsite: Report

Australian authorities are hoping to speak to the driver of a car seen leaving a campsite on the day 4-year-old Cleo Smith disappeared.

9News Now reports that the car, described only as a “passenger vehicle” and “not a large truck,” was spotted seen leaving a campsite in Western Australia Gascoyne region, where Cleo vanished from over a week ago.

The car was spotted driving south on Blowholes Road, away from the Blowholes Campsite where Cleo was last seen. Police said they are currently reviewing security footage from the northwest coastal highway, where many homes and businesses are located.

it might have picked up the motion of somebody else, but she is in the background talking. I am picturing the camp toilet/shower. Most here have them. Some far nicer than others.
