Authorities searching for clues after Texas college student mysteriously disappears

Authorities in Texas are searching for clues in the mysterious disappearance of a college student whose family said he went missing after taking his dog out earlier this week.

Caleb Harris, a student at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, was last seen in the early morning hours on Monday near his off-campus apartment complex, according to police.

His roommates were unable to locate him later Monday morning and his family reported him missing, according to the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Harris' father, Randy Harris, told ABC Corpus Christi affiliate KIII that his dog returned home but his son never did. He left behind his keys, wallet, and vehicle, police said. He did have his phone but it has since turned off, police said.

His father said there wasn't anything to lead them to believe the student was in any danger or planning to leave.

Search Intensifies for Missing Texas A&M Student Who Vanished While Waiting for Uber Order

Search efforts to locate a 21-year-old Texas A&M Corpus Christi student escalated on Tuesday, as searchers focused on the areas around a Nueces County apartment complex.

Searchers have been focusing on the vicinity behind the North Padre Island apartment complex, The Cottages, where Caleb Harris lives, along with the eastern and southern sectors of the community.

Harris was last seen March 4 at a little before 3 a.m. at his apartment in the 1900 block of Ennis Joslin, while taking his new dog out for a walk around the complex. His parents told FOX News Digital that Harris sent a Snapchat message around 2:45 a.m.

Shortly after, he went outside to wait for an Uber order. It was the last time they heard from him.

“Roommate got a new dog, and so, from 10 [p.m.] on, they were playing with the dog. We do have some video of them playing with the dog,” Caleb’s father, Randy Harris said.

“He was preparing for the next afternoon. He had ordered from a convenience store his lunch for the next day, which is very normal. … He’s a creature of habit, so it was very normal for him to do that.”

Harris had his phone on him but it was turned off, and according to his father, the restaurant said the Uber order was marked as complete.

“He kind of vanished,” Randy Harris added. “There’s no evidence of wrongdoing, but there’s no evidence at all. And so it’s a matter of looking at every inch, everything we could possibly think of…It is a mystery.”

According to Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers, Harris’ roommates said they couldn’t find him after he left the apartment to wait on the food.

Search for missing Texas A&M student Caleb Harris expands across North Padre Island

More than a week has passed since Caleb Harris, a 21-year-old college student at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, went missing from his off-campus apartment, prompting a wider and more rigorous search across North Padre Island and contiguous areas of the city this week.

Family and friends from across the state have joined in the effort, including team members from Search and Rescue SATX, a professionally trained volunteer first responder organization based in San Antonio that deploys throughout the state.

Since last Friday, group members have scoured the island for clues related to Harris' disappearance, walking along roads, shorelines, nature preserves, and secluded areas of Oso Bay and Flour Bluff, including Victoria Park and Suter Wildlife Refuge.

On Tuesday morning, they searched the dunes near Padre Balli Park and moved their investigation to the Packery Channel and an inlet behind the International Trade Corridor in the afternoon, where people could be seen fishing along the bank.

The group brought dirt bikes and underwater drones to cover more ground and to search to depths of 300 feet below the water for six- to eight-hour periods.

"We have a group of people participating this morning, and a new group this afternoon," said Nina Glass, the organization's founder. "We're searching marshy areas and those that get very dark at night or that are easily accessible by car. Anything that will give us leads."

The New Braunfels man was last seen or heard from after walking his dog near his off-campus apartment, The Cottages at Corpus Christi, during the overnight hours of March 4, according to a news release on the Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD) Blotter.

Family members reported him missing when his roommates were unable to locate him later that morning. An avid fisherman, he had been chatting with friends about a planned fishing trip and ordered food from UberEats between 2 and 3 a.m., after which his phone died or was turned off. He was wearing teal pants and a white shirt.

Harris left his keys, vehicle, and wallet at the apartment, according to CCPD officers.

Community and volunteers unite in search for Caleb Harris in Corpus Christi
Over a dozen volunteers combed through a field in a grid search Thursday picking up anything man-made.

The grass was incredibly high and not many people traffic through that area.

That's exactly why this is the kinds of places that are important to scour through and Caleb Harris's apartment is within a few-mile radius.

Police and volunteer search crews have focused their efforts and laid out a map before getting started.

Volunteers from New Braunfels, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi have been searching together since last Friday.

The Coast Guard was also a part of the search involving helicopter crews within the Osa Bay and shoreline.

Drainage ditches, the road near Caleb's apartment, and a whole map have been scoured through with no leads in sight.

"We're out here just basically looking for anything that has to do with Caleb. Teal pants, white button-down shirt, iPhone, possibly a watch maybe. We're just out here looking. We haven't found- nobody has found a trace," shared search volunteer Nina Glass.

Caleb's father, Randy Harris shared that he appreciates every volunteer that turned up to help in the search.

"The number one thing people can do is pray and keep his name out there on social media," said Caleb's father, Randy Harris. "That's by far the best direction."

The support from the New Braunfels community is helping to keep the family going.

The Corpus Christi Police Department said that divers, cadets, detectives, and officers are working on every tip that comes in.

Caleb Harris' father details last conversation he had with his son before disappearance

For the past eleven days, the Harris family has been full of worry and concern since they first found out about Caleb's disappearance. His father described it as a 'parent's worst nightmare.'

Harris said he spoke with his son the night before he vanished and everything was fine. He received the news that Caleb was missing from his wife hours later.

“His roommate had just called and said he was missing and they couldn’t find him," Harris said. "Then she called me and I immediately came down here.”

Harris added that the sequence in which his son disappeared seems odd. Caleb stayed in contact with his family often and even had upcoming plans with friends. So Harris claimed something isn’t adding up.

“It’s his intentions. I mean, texting us, Snapchatting his friends, everything," Harris said. "They just got a new dog that evening and they were out playing with the dog and signed the lease on his apartment for next year.”

Law enforcement agencies have been working nonstop, using local and statewide resources to find Caleb. Friends have also joined in on the search, creating Facebook pages aiming to find him.

The search for Caleb Harris enters third week

The search for missing Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student Caleb Harris is entering week three.

The 21-year-old disappeared March 4 and was last seen at his apartment complex on Ennis Joslin.

His father, Randy Harris, told 3-NEWS the family is not giving up on finding him.

"We are searching anything we can think of and relying on the authorities to give us information," Harris said. "Thank you for reaching out. We need to keep this going. He's out there somewhere."

‘We have not slowed down’: Search for missing college student takes new direction as Corpus Christi police seek leads in San Antonio

The investigation into a missing college student from New Braunfels has expanded.

According to the Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD), detectives are now traveling to San Antonio and New Braunfels to search for new leads in the case.

Loved ones say Caleb was spotted barefoot in surveillance video. According to Randall, Caleb would never walk off in the middle of the night.

On Wednesday, a CCPD spokesperson released the following statement:

"Corpus Christi Police Department officers, along with their federal and state partners, continue to work diligently to solve the disappearance of Caleb Harris. Harris is the 21-year-old Texas A&M Corpus Christi student who vanished without a trace from his off-campus apartment during the foggy early morning hours of Monday, March 4th, 2024.

Following the initial exhaustive, but unsuccessful, search of hundreds of acres surrounding Harris’s apartment complex on the 1900 block of Ennis Joslin Drive, Criminal Investigation Detectives turned their efforts toward establishing a timeline for Harris in the hours and days preceding his sudden absence, interviewing his roommates, friends, family members and acquaintances. Detectives at this point in the investigation have no reason to suspect any of these individuals had anything to do with Harris’s disappearance. Officers then went door to door throughout his and an adjacent apartment complex, scouring the area for possible witnesses or surveillance video, as well as searching over thirty vacant apartments for the missing student.

An investigative team consisting of Investigators from the Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and Organized Crime Unit, the FBI, and the United States Marshals Service, along with several civilian crime analysts was formed within days of Harris’s vanishing and continues to work full time to solve his disappearance. The team meets daily to share information from the previous day’s efforts, discuss possible leads, and plot the course of the investigation. This past Friday, the investigative team met at Police Headquarters with a squad of five Texas Rangers to share all information on the status of the case and seek any advice the Rangers could provide. The consensus from the Rangers was that the investigative team was pursuing the most logical course of action in this search and pledged their continued assistance and technical support to the team.

The CCPD wishes to assure the public that while the search for Caleb Harris may be less visible than the early days of this investigation, it is by no means less intense. Teams of Detectives continue to interview potential witnesses here in Corpus Christi and have traveled both to San Antonio and New Braunfels to conduct interviews. Detectives are continuously following up on tips, are chasing potential leads and will expend every effort until Caleb Harris is found.

Despite these exhaustive efforts, Investigators still have not settled upon a motive for Harris’s strange disappearance, nor identified a suspect or person of interest. Detectives are seeking assistance from the public to solve this case. If you have information regarding the disappearance of Caleb Harris, please contact the Corpus Christi Police Department at (361) 886-2840 or (361) 886-2600.

Anyone who would like to keep their identity secret and still provide information to Detectives should call Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS (8477) or submit the tip online."

Caleb Harris' father asks for help finding missing son from New Braunfels

A New Braunfels family has spent nearly three weeks searching for their son who vanished in Corpus Christi. Although there is much left unanswered in Caleb Harris' disappearance, his family continues to show unwavering hope for his safe return.

"We were thrown off. It’s just not like him to disappear without being prepared in some way. He left his keys, his truck locked, and his wallet. He left everything but his phone. He was barefooted. There was no intent to go anywhere. He brought the dog back, went outside for some reason, and then he was gone,” Randy said.

"Of course, everybody has theories, but right now, there is still no direction, clues, or evidence other than that he just vanished … Our biggest push is begging everybody to look through their ring cameras. There has to be a camera somewhere that caught him,” Randy said.

Missing student Caleb Harris' family raises reward for info; police build timeline of disappearance

  • 12:56 a.m. — Harris was captured by a doorbell camera as he played with a puppy in the parking lot alongside his roommates and friend. The friend left soon after, and there was no sign of anything amiss.
  • 2:20 a.m. — One roommate said he was going to bed, and Harris responded that he was going to order food via UberEats for his lunch at school.
  • 2:44 a.m. — Harris sent a Snapchat video to his sister that appears to show him walking a puppy in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
  • 3:03 a.m. — He sent a Snapchat video to a friend, showing a bridge within a few hundred feet of the entrance to the complex.
  • 3:12 a.m. — A nearby cell tower received the last location information from Harris' phone.
  • 3:20 a.m. — The UberEats driver left Harris' order at the door of his apartment — as requested.
  • 11 a.m. — One of Harris' roommates found his order still sitting at the door. The roommates were alarmed when they discovered his truck, keys and wallet were still at the apartment. They searched for Harris briefly and reported him missing soon after.
The responding officer checked local hospitals and searched the area for any sign of violence, but to no avail. Inside the apartment, there was no sign of foul play, police said.

Police have ruled out family, friends and the UberEats driver as having any involvement in Harris' disappearance.

Harris' family has been active in the search. His father told the Express-News that his son's behavior leading up to the disappearance was not indicative of plans to run away.

As the investigation of missing Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student Caleb Harris enters the eighth week, search and rescue crews are awaiting new leads from the Corpus Christi Police Department to determine where to look next.

Among those organizations is Search and Rescue SATX, a professionally trained first responder group based in San Antonio that has been stationed in town for the last seven weeks. Volunteers have ventured out across Corpus Christi and North Padre Island on dirt bikes and in boats, submerging underwater drones into the coastal waters to find clues.

They've covered miles of territory on foot, from the Oso Bridge to Packery Channel and the Laguna Madre, focusing on roads, shorelines, nature preserves and heavily vegetated and secluded areas.

The group's searches expanded in April as people from the community and social media began participating in the effort to find the 21-year-old New Braunfels man, who was last seen walking his dog outside his off-campus apartment, The Cottages at Corpus Christi, in the early morning hours of March 4.

Seven people from Corpus Christi have joined the organization locally, said founder Nina Glass, and while there is no new information on the case, searches will continue as more becomes available.

Other nonprofits based in Texas, including Texas Search and Rescue (TEXSAR), which sends out K-9 units, and Project Absentis, which helps find missing and unidentified persons, have also coordinated with law enforcement to find the missing student.

Harris' family posted a $25,000 reward on March 21 for anyone with information leading to the safe return of their son by March 31, encouraging people to call (361) 826-2950 to report details. That reward has since been increased to $50,000 with no due date. A GoFundMe campaign created by a friend on Harris' behalf has raised more than $68,000.

Corpus Christi police published their latest update of the investigation on the police blotter on March 28, saying they continue to work fervently behind the scenes to solve the case with the help of state and federal partners.

A team comprised of detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division and Organized Crime Units of CCPD formed within days of Harris vanishing and now work in collaboration with the FBI, U.S. Marshals and several civilian crime analysts. Corpus Christi police say they continue an intense, full-time investigation to solve the case, with teams of detectives persisting in interviewing potential witnesses in Corpus Christi, San Antonio and New Braunfels.

She said the posters also have been put up at stops around the city.

"We've also shared it on social media, as well," she said in a text message Wednesday.

New eyewitness in case of missing New Braunfels student Caleb Harris, father says

An eyewitness has come forward in the case of missing New Braunfels college student Caleb Harris, his father said.

The witness said he spotted a man who looked like the missing student on the morning he disappeared, Randy Harris said in an interview with former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer that was posted to YouTube on Wednesday.

The eyewitness said he spotted a man who looked like Caleb around 3:35 a.m. or 3:40 a.m. walking under a bridge about 0.8 miles away from the apartment. It was a foggy night, but the man appeared to be walking a small white dog, which matches the description of a puppy belonging to his roommate’s girlfriend.

“This guy was very vivid with what he saw,” family friend Tony Mathis said in the interview. “We can definitively say that we believe this witness to be credible.”

All of Caleb’s shoes were found in his apartment, but the eyewitness couldn’t tell in the fog whether the student was barefoot. He was seen on security footage barefoot earlier that morning.

The sighting was in a location different from where Caleb’s phone pinged for the final time, his father said. According to Mathis, law enforcement has called that last ping at 3:12 a.m. an “anomaly.” The Secret Service is analyzing Caleb’s electronic devices, including a laptop, iPad, smart watch, Xbox and router for any additional clues.
