‘We’ll find them:’ Son of missing Windsor couple says parents were going to lake cabin, but no sign of them

The son of a missing Windsor couple said his parents planned to go with friends to the family's cabin by Sawyer Lake more than three hours away, but says there's no sign of them there and there's been no contact with them for days.

"We'll find them," Chandler Halderson said of his parents, Bart Halderson, 50, and Krista Halderson, 53. "It's better to not listen to the negative theories," he says.

The younger Halderson said his parents planned to travel to their property in the community of Hollister in Langlade County Friday to do some minor repairs on their cabin and carry out general maintenance. He says friends were going with them and driving the group, but says he does not know who their traveling companions were.

Halderson said he received a text from his mother after his parents had apparently left on the trip.

"She got back to me on Sunday, said they made it safely," Halderson said.

Halderson said he contacted authorities after his parents did not return as planned Tuesday, and after a relative went to Hollister and did not find them. Halderson said authorities in Langlade County also checked the property, but found the cabin locked. "The sheriff said it looked like there wasn't anyone home," Halderson said.

Chandler Halderson holds out hope the inability to locate or contact his parents is benign.

"They're maybe at a casino, their phones off, no reception. Maybe they're on a boat, having some fun with their friends," Halderson said.

Son of missing Windsor couple arrested for providing false information, sheriff’s office says

The son of a missing Windsor couple was taken into custody Thursday night for allegedly giving false information on his parents’ whereabouts, according to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

“They were picked up by their friends, who I never got the name of. I assumed it was someone I was aware of, like close neighbors of theirs up the street, or their best friends down on the east side,” Halderson said. “That’s what I assumed. I didn’t look any more into it. They got picked up and left with another couple.”

Chandler said the couple left for the trip before 6 a.m. Friday. A news release said detectives believe their disappearance is suspicious and that their son gave officials false information.

Halderson was booked into the Dane County Jail at 9:30 p.m. for providing false information on a missing persons case.

i didn't like when he was giving excuses that they "might' be at the casino, etc and not concerned.

If you weren't concerned, why did you report them missing????

Reminded me of Maya Millete's husband. "Oh maybe she went for a hike or maybe she's off with her friends."

Missing Windsor man's son implicated in his murder; mother remains missing

A prosecutor on Monday indicated authorities believe a 23-year-old Windsor man shot and dismembered his father before dumping him in a rural area, then lied to investigators by telling them both his parents had gone away for the Fourth of July weekend and never returned.

No charges have been filed yet against Chandler M. Halderson in the death of Bart A. Halderson, 50. The Dane County Medical Examiner's office earlier Monday identified remains found in the town of Cottage Grove as the elder Halderson. His wife and Chandler's mother, Krista, 53, remains missing.

Dane County Court Commissioner Mark Fremgen set bond in Chandler Halderson's case at $10,000, rejecting pleas from Deputy District Attorney William Brown for $1 million bond. Chandler Halderson was booked into the Dane County Jail on Thursday night on a tentative felony charge of providing false information on a missing person.

In a statement, the Medical Examiner's Office said "preliminary results from the autopsy confirm that Mr. Halderson died from homicidal violence including firearm injury."

During Chandler Halderson's initial hearing Monday, Brown said Bart Halderson's body had been dismembered. He expected homicide charges to be filed against the younger Halderson by Thursday.

Court documents show why police think missing couple’s son lied

In a probable cause statement filed July 9th, the Sheriff’s Office says Halderson told them his parents were picked up by an unknown aquaintance early in the morning on July 1st. In a conversation with News 3 Now, Halderson said his parents were picked up by a couple that he didn’t know, but knew they were leaving to go to their cabin in Langlade County and left early that morning to beat the holiday weekend traffic.

Halderson told News 3 Now and investigators that he received a text message from his mother on July 4th saying they had arrived in White Lake, Wisconsin. Halderson allegedly told the Sheriff’s Office his mom said they planned to go to a parade that day, but their investigation found there was no parade in White Lake that day, and that Krista and Bart Halderson were never at their cabin in White Lake.

The Sheriff’s Office says local law enforcement checked the cabin and interviewed the cabin’s neighbors, and found no sign anybody had recently been to the Halderson’s cabin or on that property.

According to the probable cause statement, further investigation found that Chandler Halderson was seen at a known acquaintance’s home in the Town of Cottage Grove in rural Dane County, driving his vehicle in reverse with the rear hatch open in a field near the woods.

Authorities searched the area and found remains later identified as a human torso a short distance from where Chandler Halderson’s vehicle was seen. The remains were sent in for identification, and on Monday, the Dane County Medical Examiner’s office identified the torso as belonging to Bart Halderson. The medical examiner ruled he died as a result of a homicide and had been shot.

Krista Halderson remains missing, and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office asked for the public’s help in collecting any information on her whereabouts while also saying they were investigating Bart Halderson’s death as a homicide.
