Colorado dentist accused of poisoning wife and mom of 6 after ‘heinous, complex and calculated’ crime leaves her brain dead

March 20, 2023
A 45-year-old dentist in Colorado faces charges of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, a mother of six children, after severe headaches left her brain dead, investigators said over the weekend.

According to the Aurora Police Department, James Toliver Craig was taken into custody early Sunday morning, days after he allegedly drove his 43-year-old wife to the hospital.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the wife’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was placed on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. She was declared medically brain dead a short time later.” further investigation revealed that the victim’s sudden death was linked to poison.

Although authorities did not immediately identify the victim, a since-removed website for Craig’s Summerbrook Dental practice said her name was Angela. A Law&Crime search of the Wayback Machine-archived version of that website shows that Dr. Jim Craig called himself and Angela “the proud parents of six great kids”:

Colorado dentist charged with murder in ‘complex and calculated’ poisoning death of his wife

There was evidence to suggest James Toliver Craig, 45, was “working on starting a new life” with another woman, a police affidavit says.

Aurora dentist searched “how to make poison,” bought arsenic and cyanide before wife’s death, affidavit says

An Aurora dentist bought arsenic and cyanide days before his wife was poisoned to death, searched online about how to poison someone and was having an affair, police alleged in his arrest affidavit.

James Craig, 45, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder Sunday, hours after his wife, Angela Craig, 43, was taken off life support and died. Investigators believe James Craig put poison in protein shakes he made for his wife, according to the affidavit.

Aurora police Division Chief Mark Hildebrand called Angela Craig’s death “a heinous, complex and calculated murder” in a statement released following her husband’s arrest.

Weeks before Angela died, James Craig used a communal computer at his workplace to conduct numerous searches about poison, investigators alleged in the 52-page affidavit.

The searches on YouTube and Google included: “how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human,” “Is Arsenic Detectable in Autopsy,” “Top 5 Undetectable Poisons That Show No Signs of Foul Play,” “how to make poison,” and “The Top 10 Deadliest Plants (They Can Kill You),” according to the affidavit.

The couple — parents to six children — had been having marital troubles before Angela’s sudden severe sickness this month. James Craig ordered arsenic from Amazon.com on Feb. 27, police allege. He received the package on March 4, and two days later, his wife was admitted to a hospital with symptoms that aligned with poisoning, according to the affidavit. She was released that day, but returned to the hospital on March 9.

While she was hospitalized, James Craig ordered two additional poisons — cyanide and oleandrin — from medical suppliers, according to the affidavit. (He never received the oleandrin because the package was intercepted by police.)

Also while his wife was hospitalized, a woman with whom James Craig had exchanged sexually explicit messages flew from Texas into Colorado to visit him, police alleged.

“It appears James was flying this woman into Denver while his wife and the mother of his children was dying in the hospital,” Aurora police detective Bobbi Olson wrote in the affidavit.

affidavit & detailed article about how this inversigation unfolded

summary:

Through this investigation, police noticed many similarities between her symptoms and the effects of ingesting cyanide and arsenic, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The conclusion of the affidavit determined several aspects of the case that ultimately led to James Craig’s arrest.
“In totality, this investigation has proven that James has gone to great lengths to try and end his wife's life,” it reads.
The conclusion, as written in the affidavit, noted the following points:
  • Nobody aside from James Craig had suggested Angela Craig had suicidal ideations
  • The Department of Human Services, which heard the above point from only him, said it believed he was creating a cover-up story
  • James Craig had been communicating with a woman in what appeared to be a sexual relationship while his wife was dying in the hospital, and helped arrange her travel plans
  • An email used to research undetectable poisons was only used from one of the dental rooms at his practice
  • That email had been used to purchase arsenic, which arrived to the Craig home on March 4
  • Angela Craig felt ill on March 6 and was hospitalized with symptoms consistent with arsenic ingestion. She was released later that day
  • James Craig ordered Oleandrin, which was intercepted and never delivered
  • On March 13, a package arrived and James Craig had instructed the office manager not to open it. This was potassium cyanide. A co-worker unaware of his instructions opened it
  • Angela Craig returned home from the hospital on March 14 after being admitted on March 9
  • She was back in the hospital the following day at 11 a.m. She was put on life support and did not regain brain activity before dying
  • James Craig regularly made her protein shakes
  • Investigators believe the poison was in these shakes
  • The poisons were not located during the searches of the Craig home or dental office
The affidavit concludes by reading: “Based on the totality of the investigation, James has shown the planning and intent to end his wife's life by searching for ways to kill someone undetected, providing her poisons that align with her hospitalized symptoms, and working on starting a new life with (Person D). Your affiant finds there is more than enough preliminary evidence sufficient to arrest James Craig with premeditated first-degree murder.”

Talk about having him dead to rights even without finding the poisons. Perfect example of more than enough evidence and circumstantial in some respects.

It really doesn't matter does it if you are educated and a professional, you still can be really STUPID and led around by your you know what in the case of some men (I didn't say all) and your ego and so much so that you can kill the mother of your children and in some cases your kids as well (i.e., Chris Watts).

Disgusting evil pigs! But his new woman would be lucky to have him. Yah right. No thanks.

The mistress who has found herself at the center of the Colorado dentist murder case can be identified for the first time today by DailyMail.com.

She is orthodontist Karin Cain, 49, who is currently in the middle of a divorce from her husband Jason.

She did not respond to questions about her alleged affair with porn-addicted dentist James Craig who has been charged with poisoning his wife.

Instead, she called police on a DailyMail.com photographer. The cops agreed he was just doing his job and told him that Cain had told them she knew the media was looking for her because of her relationship with Craig.

Recommend reading even if it is Daily Mail. Wow. I could say so much. First it is so reminiscent of Chad Daybell and Tammy and there is a lot we don't know there but I believe likely a very similar relationship with other things going on that would mimic this, and things wondered about and forgiven by the wife. So many things I could point out that way.

Then we have a porn addicted cheating Mormon. I'm sorry but man do we see enough of similar things. Even Jodi Arias, I know she IS guilty but aren't there things during the course of the trial you believed in that Travis was Mormon but he wasn't exactly following the doctrine/rules when it came to sex, etc.

Getting away from both of those things that I could highlight a lot more about, but so can probably most others here, this man was leaving his wife for someone older not younger.... And I already felt him stupid in an earlier post and this just confirms it. His wife was onto him before dying and so was an office employee he worked with which tells me he wasn't a good liar or was burning bridges everywhere and not a good liar. I can only guess the wife was following her beliefs and trusting in her beliefs in right up to the end professing love for her husband, etc. even while having reason to believe he did this to her (and had before!!!) trusting it would just be made right or something by God and she was to stay committed to him and forgive??

It also reminds me of Alex Murdaugh in some ways...

These are I think certain types of men who are not adults and never have been and are selfish to the core and it takes the woman who is being snowed a lot of time through the relationship to see what the person really is and when they do get a glimpse they get lied to and told they are crazy very likely etc. and when you have them dead to rights, then there is an apology and so on. And in cases like this, add their faith and rules...

Finally, I will just say again that this idiot was really, really stupid and so obvious. THe "lover" doesn't appear too bright either and both had families and spouses. Both had careers and businesses. Neither looks like a prize or sounds like one either. I guess the sex and sexting must have been something that was just too hot to not kill, lose all, etc. Yah right.

His wife knew. His office employee knew. Did his new lover know? Was she part or in the know? And if not, was it worth it, with Daily Mail and now all the world knowing who she is...? Did she think him a prince or was she just as bad?

I will stop. Just unbelievable.... And not young and dumb, all in their late 40s....

A Colorado dentist charged with fatally poisoning his wife with cyanide- and arsenic-spiked protein shakes so that he could start a fresh life with his mistress appeared in court Thursday and refused to look at his older children or parents, according to a report.

James Craig, 45, wearing an orange jail-issue jumpsuit, was formally charged with first-degree murder in the Arapahoe County District Court for the death of Angela Craig, the mother of his six children.

Craig, who was arrested Sunday, shuffled into the Centennial courtroom with his head bowed and his ankles shackled, avoiding eye contact with his family members seated in the gallery, the Daily Mail reported.

<snip>
During the 10-minute proceeding, Craig waived his right to a prompt preliminary hearing and agreed to return to court April 7.

His court-appointed defense lawyer, Katie Telfer, requested a gag order, arguing that Aurora Police Chief Mark Hildebrand's comments in a press release were tantamount to a "presumption of guilt."

Why do peeps keep doing these kinds of things and really think they won't get caught?! Dumb and sad!!
Couldn't have said it better. "They" never learn and always think they are going to be different, not get caught and make such stupid mistakes.

Can't look at his parents and his kids? Well doesn't that just say a lot... This tells me his parents and kids know... He knows they know... Sounds a bit different that some we've seen where families are in denial, I'm guessing this one isn't. Quite possibly.

An Arapahoe County judge set a $100 million cash-only bail for a murder defendant Thursday as judges across the state begin grappling with last week’s Colorado Supreme Court ruling that found defendants charged with first-degree murder are now entitled to bail.

Before last week’s ruling, first-degree murder defendants could be held in jail without bail in Colorado because the crime was considered a capital offense. But because the state abolished the death penalty in 2020, the justices ruled that first-degree murder defendants charged since then have a right to bail.

First-degree murder is no longer a capital offense, the justices found in the June 20 ruling, and defendants in those murder cases must be given the chance to pay bail and be free while their cases are pending.

That’s led judges across metro Denver to issue sky-high bail amounts in the last 10 days. A man accused of killing an Arvada police officer had a $15 million cash-only bail set Thursday. The Aurora dentist accused of poisoning his wife to death had his bail set at $10 million — also cash-only — on Wednesday, while the three teenagers accused of killing a woman by throwing a rock through her windshield had their bail set at $2 million last week. And a 19-year-old woman accused of stabbing her newborn to death when she was 17 had bail set at $2 million cash or surety Thursday, lower than the $5 million cash-only bail the prosecution sought.

The ruling thrust judges into uncharted territory as they wrestle with what amount of money best balances first-degree murder defendants’ constitutional rights with the threat to public safety and the rights of victims, 18th Judicial District Court Judge Theresa Slade said during a bond hearing in Arapahoe District Court on Thursday.

Colorado has been sliding for some time but ALL or MOST states are. Good for this judge, ONE HUNDRED MILLION if they have to give bond. Shows the loopholes they don't think of doesn't it? And these people run our world.

People aren't or don't see it, some do, everything is going SOUTH and I don't mean to Mexico.

First degree murder is not a capital offense. Wow.

The wife of an Aurora dentist who searched online about how to poison someone was poisoned to death, the Arapahoe County coroner confirmed Wednesday.

Angela Craig, 43, died from lethal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a decongestant found in over-the-counter eyedrops, Coroner Kelly Lear testified in court Wednesday.

She spoke during the preliminary hearing for Angela Craig’s husband James Craig, 45, who is charged with first-degree murder in his wife’s death. On Wednesday, prosecutors also added a second charge of tampering with physical evidence.

Judge Shay Whitaker ruled prosecutors had sufficient probable cause to take James Craig to trial on both counts. His arraignment is set for Aug. 29.

GOOD. How is his new honey donig? Supporting him? What an idiot but an evil one.

Six kids motherless and fatherless. People whose mouths and teeth he worked on are probably abhorred and rinsing and brushing obsessively from the thought of him. Just another POS who will likely bite the dust. But with the way of sentencing these days that remains to be seen.

Also another easy answer but despicable one--all for the selfish love of money, his own sick wants and another woman. I am waiting one day to hear the d*ck defense. I didn't do it, my di*k controlled me along with my other personalities GREED and GLUTTONY and INSTANT GRATIFICATION. How much porn do ya think is found on this type of guy's electronics? I bet it is a safe bet that it is there in most cases like this. As well as that this wasn't the first or only other woman.

You know what I think is really, really sad? These kids have to struggle as they face their friends in school, knowing that this man... this father... has taken their mother away and they won't have either parent anymore. And they also struggle trying to sort out whether they still love and admire him or give in to feelings of hate, embarassment, unbelief, just every emotion you can think of. This kind of thing hurts children and other family and there is nothing they can take to make it less painful.
My heart goes out to them, and I pray that somehow, someday they can find some peace of mind.
I don't know how people should react nowadays but I do know that if this had been my father, I would have hated him and never spoke to him again.

I agree with every word you said.

It's heartbreaking. In such cases, one parent ruins everyone's lives including his or her own. How they think it will be otherwise and they will come out of it better, I have no idea. For one thing, I guess they don't believe they will be caught, the entire goal is what they want at the high cost to everyone else including their own children one would think they would love but that's not love imo.

Colorado dentist accused of poisoning his wife with arsenic pleads not guilty

A Colorado dentist accused of fatally poisoning his wife in March pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Authorities say James Toliver Craig allegedly poisoned his wife’s protein shakes with arsenic he ordered online, after making a number of internet searches – including “how to make poison” – in the weeks leading up to her death.

Angela Craig, 43, died March 15 after being hospitalized several times for severe headaches and dizziness, according to the Aurora Police Department.

James Craig’s trial is set for April 19, 2024, with a special panel for jury selection. Testimony likely will begin the following week. CNN has reached out to Craig’s attorney, Andrew Ho, but did not immediately hear back.

In March, investigators alleged in an arrest warrant application, Craig “has shown the planning and intent to end his wife’s life by searching for ways to kill someone undetected, providing her poisons that align with her hospitalized symptoms, and working on starting a new life” with another woman.

The affidavit says Angela Craig died after going to the hospital for the third time in March. After she arrived the final time, she had a severe seizure, was placed on a ventilator and was declared medically brain dead soon after, it says.

In the weeks before her death, James Craig used a computer at his dental practice to research multiple “undetectable poisons” and make internet searches including “how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human” and YouTube searches for “how to make poison” and “Top 5 Undetectable Poisons That Show No Signs of Foul Play,” according to the affidavit.

The husband also used a new email account to order arsenic online, the affidavit says.

According to the affidavit, Angela Craig’s sister told investigators the couple’s marriage was tumultuous and she was told by Angela that James Craig had previously drugged her because he was planning to attempt suicide and didn’t want his wife to be able to stop him.

After Angela Craig’s death, her sister told investigators James Craig told her he did not want an autopsy to take place.

“James said he felt if they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her when she was alive he wouldn’t let them poke her more when she was dead,” reads the affidavit.

Of course he did. Plead not guilty I mean. Basically all do.
