Really sad ending. But at least the family can eventually have closure. Prayers to the family.

Stroupe appears in court for first time on murder charges

The felon accused of killing Thomas Bryson, a beloved 68-year-old Mills River man, was in court Tuesday for his first appearance on murder charges.

The elder Philip Stroupe also appeared in court Tuesday, after his charges were upgraded from accessory after the fact of kidnapping to accessory after the fact of murder. Newman said Stroupe Sr. withheld information from authorities that could have led to Bryson’s body being located earlier.

“We just don’t have the patience for that kind of stuff,” Newman said in a press conference after the hearings. “This community's been through a lot and this family has been through a lot.”

The three people accused of harboring Stroupe in a Barnardsville home were also charged with accessory after the fact despite claims that they were held hostage at gunpoint.

Grand jury: Murder suspect indicted on local charges

The Weaverville suspect charged in the murder of a Mills River man was indicted by a McDowell grand jury on charges stemming from the aftermath, according to court records.

Phillip Michael Stroupe II, 39, of King Road in Weaverville, faces one count each in McDowell of felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger, resisting a public officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Days after Stroupe’s arrest, Bryson’s body was located in a corn field in Arden on July 30. Stroupe was subsequently charged and indicted in Henderson County with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. Henderson District Attorney Greg Newman confirmed that he is pursuing the death penalty.

Also arrested in the investigation are: Stroupe’s father, 68-year-old Phillip Stroupe Sr.; 40-year-old Jennifer Hawkins and 23-year old Larry Hawkins II of Barnardsville; and 45-year-old Frederick Badgero of Nebo, all charged with accessory after the fact of first-degree murder.
