A missing person investigation in Lee County is now a death investigation.

The body of Ted Lee was found in a church parking lot in Manatee County just hours after deputies said they believed the 58-year-old was in danger. His vehicle, a silver 2015 Toyota Corolla, is still missing.

Detectives are working with the Lee County Sheriff's Office as they say it appears he was killed in Lee County.

    Ted Lee murder investigation

Jonathan Ruffini, 18, and Tyson Hunter, 23, have been charged with second degree murder, grand theft of automobile, and fraudulent use of a credit card, and Lavaya May, 16, was charged with accessory after the fact of murder, grand theft of automobile, and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Lee, 58 of Buckingham, went missing Thursday night and was found dead and wrapped in a carpet with trauma to his body Friday night near a garbage container behind a Bradenton church.

The sheriff's office said the common thread in the case and in the relationships with the murdered man, Ted Lee, and the two young men arrested Monday, is May, also arrested Monday. She lived in the same neighborhood as Lee for years.

The sheriff's office said that knowing the general area the suspects were traveling to, and sharing this information with Kansas authorities, led to their capture. The three suspects are held awaiting extradition.

Lavaya May, one of three suspects in the death of Buckingham resident Ted Lee, was booked into Lee County jail. The 16 year old, originally named as an accessory to Lee's killing, now faces second degree murder charges. Jonathan Ruffini, 18, and Tyson Hunter, 23, have also been charged with second degree murder. The trio also face charges of grand theft of automobile, and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Teen girl charged with murder after she 'convinced her boyfriend and his friend to stab and beat to death a man she claimed sexually abused her.
    • Trio are accused of conspiring to kill Ted Lee, 58, in Florida last month
    • Cops say gang plotted the murder after May said Lee sexually abused her
    • Tyson and Ruffini then attacked Lee in his house with a bat and a knife in an attack so severe a piece of his skull was embedded in the wall
    • Lee's body was found dumped behind a church, while alleged attackers were arrested in Kansas four days after the killing
As Lee arrived home, police say that Ruffini fired off a text message to May saying simply: 'It's time.'

After Lee walked inside the property Tyson began beating him with the bat, hitting him '15 to 20 times' in the head, detectives allege.

One of the blows was so severe that a piece of Lee's skull broke off and embedded itself in the sheetrock.

Police say Ruffini testified that after Lee fell to the ground, he approached him and stabbed him in the abdomen while he was still alive.

Ruffini told officers that Tyson pulled the knife out and stabbed Lee again, before twisting the blade.

The men then soaked the blood-covered areas of the house with bleach, before wrapping Lee's body in a sheet, blanket, and rug, arrest warrants say.

May then arrived back at the house, investigators say, hugging Ruffini and Tyson and telling them she was 'glad Lee was dead.'

The group are then accused of dragging Lee's body out of the house and placing it in the trunk of his Toyota Corolla before taking his credit cards and leaving.

Warrants allege that Tyson became uneasy about having the body in the trunk, and so the trio left it in a dumpster behind a church 80 miles away from his home.

Lee's remains were discovered there the following day, and the missing person investigation was upgraded to a murder.

Teen agrees to 25 years in prison for Lee Co. man's murder

A Lee County teenager admitted in court he killed his girlfriend's neighbor.

19-year-old Justin Ruffini entered guilty pleas to 2nd degree murder, illegal use of a credit card and grand theft. As part of his plea deal, he will spend 25 years in prison if he testifies against co-defendant Lavaya May. Prosecutors will decide if he held up to his end of the bargain after May's trial.

Detectives say Ruffini, Hunter Tyson, and Lavaya May planned to kill Ted Lee for months so they could take his car and credit cards. Lee's family was not in court today, but prosecutors told the judge they approve of the deal. A long-time friend of Lee wonders if the plea deal is justice.

May is scheduled for trial in August. Her attorneys say she is the real victim because Lee was sexually molesting her. Jonathan

Last month the third person involved in the killing, Hunter Tyson, pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

So Ruffin gets 25 - will be 45 if he serves full term.
Tyson got 40 - will be 63. Tuff to be you Ty.
And Mr Lee will forever be 58, victim of thugs who planned his brutal murder.

I am often dis-satisfied with Justice - will be interested to see the outcome for May.
