Human remains of a child found in badger hole near Mountain Home

The skeletal remains of a young child have been found in a badger hole north of Mountain Home.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office says the remains were discovered by the Idaho Fish and Game on Saturday off Highway 20 north of the city limits. Authorities believe the remains are that of a child between 1 and 5 years of age.

"It is clear by the condition of the remains that they have been buried for a considerable amount of time," the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Mike Hollinshead told KBOI 2News that detectives believe the body may have been in the ground for 15-20 years, however, forensic testing will be underway soon to get precise dating.

Deputies say there was no fibrous materials such as clothing found by the remains. An archaeologist determined that the remains did not exhibit Native American characteristics.

Sheriff: Child’s skeleton found in badger hole was likely buried 15-20 years ago

Elmore County Sheriff Mike Hollinshead told the Statesman Tuesday that the skeleton, believed to belong to a child between the ages of 1 and 5, was protruding from a grave that was being used as a badger den.

“It was in the grave, but not intact,” Hollinshead said. “The badger had come out of the hole and pushed some of the bones out.”

He said workers for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game were at the site near Hot Creek Road, about a half-mile north of Mountain Home, on Saturday when “they looked down and saw some bones. Closer observation showed it to be a human skull, and we were contacted immediately.”

Sheriff: Remains of child found are ‘absolutely not’ DeOrr Kunz Jr.

“There is no way the remains could be that of DeOrr Kunz,” Elmore County Undersheriff Greg Berry told EastIdahoNews.com. “Absolutely not possible, these bones have been in the desert a lot longer than that.”

I know it's a bit early for speculation based on the limited info we know, but 4 little boys immediately came to my mind...

Ruben Felix, 2 - Missing from Shoshone, ID (about 1 hour away) since 1997 (20 years ago) - http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/f/felix_ruben.html

Jason Cannon, 2 - Missing from Boise, ID (about 45 mints away) since 1983 (34 years ago) - http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/cannon_jason.html

Curtis Fair, 2 - Missing from Nampa, ID (about 1 hour away) since 1980 (37 years ago) - http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/f/fair_curtis.html

I wonder which of the "wandering child" scenarios are suspect to LE? The first three all appear to have that as a reason, which could be valid. But this doe was buried...

    Agree.
These three are already on my hinky radar because of the simple fact that 3 toddler boys disappeared from Southern Idaho in a 2.5 year span.
Could very well be an unfortunate coincidence. But just seems off to me. Curtis and Jason are "officially" classified as non-family abductions.

There are several other kids that can be added to this list if we throw in other states that border southern Idaho.
Will wait to jump in to those until we get a bit more info.
So many missing little ones. :(

Breaking: Burial site contained two sets of remains

Elmore County Sheriff Mike Hollinshead announced on Monday that a burial site discovered north of Mountain Home on April 15 actually contained two sets of human remains.

During the course of the investigation, authorities determined that two children were buried on top of one another in the vicinity of Hot Creek Road.

The sheriff estimated unofficially that the first set of skeletal remains were from a child between three and five years old, and the second set were from a child four to nine years old.

Thank-you for the update on this case :(
    Very sad.
If below is where they were found, I am thinking the person who put them there probably thought they would never be found.
    They were wrong.
Thank goodness they were discovered - a miracle.

    Is this the area SWMNBN?

The sheriff’s office said it has been told unofficially that the first set of skeletal remains are from a child perhaps 3 to 5 years old, and the second from a child around 4 to 9 years old.
Officials have not yet been able to determine the sex of the children.

Boise State University personnel are aiding with forensics. Investigators plan to use carbon dating to determine exactly when the bodies were buried and their ages.
They are asking surrounding law enforcement agencies about missing-child cases outside of Elmore County. The sheriff’s office has not ruled out foul play.

The sheriff’s office said the site does not show characteristics of a Native American burial site.

I haven't seen anything specific, other than "north of Mountain Home". But yes, that is the general area.
