A FORMER police officer will stand trial for allegedly murdering his defacto wife in a calculated plot to cash in a multimillion-dollar life insurance policy.

Lainie Coldwell was found at the base of a tree with massive head injuries in August 2009.

Her partner Louis Mahony told police she had fallen from a ladder trying to remove decorative lights.

But authorities doubted his story and the investigation was ramped up with the efforts of the homicide and cold case squads before Mahony was charged with murder in December last year.

Police allege Mahony, a former Top End cop who once received a bravery commendation, asked colleagues at a Charleville meatworks plant for advice on what poisons were lethal and Googled the forensic science of head injuries.

He also took out two life insurance policies in the months before Ms Coldwell’s death — one a joint account and the other in his partner’s name only.

This morning a committal hearing at Charleville Court House was given testimony from a brain trauma expert who said Ms Coldwell’s injuries were “similar in certain respects” to an infant death he had previously given evidence on.

Magistrate Peter Hasted ordered Mahony to stand trial on one murder charge and four fraud-related counts related to attempts to access $2.5 million in life insurance policies.

Defence barrister Phil Hardcastle officially entered pleas of not guilty on the behalf of Mahony to declined the opportunity to speak.

The trial will take place at the Supreme Court in Toowoomba on a date to be set, likely to be some time next year.

I am SO GLAD there's a good chance at justice for poor Lainie.

It makes me think of Jenny Cook and her bizarre 'suicide'.
