BREAKING NEWS: 'Two terrorists' kill a police officer and wound another in AK-47 ambush on the Champs Elysees with one attacker shot dead - as French presidential candidates debate nearby
    • A policeman was killed this evening following a shooting in the French capital
    • Another officer was seriously wounded and the attacker was eventually shot
    • World famous avenue which is popular with tourists was on lockdown by 9pm

A police officer was shot dead and another seriously wounded by two Kalashnikov-wielding gunmen on the Champs Elysees in central Paris tonight.

French police said that the incident was probably a 'terrorist act' and the world famous avenue was on lockdown by 9pm.

Heavily armed officers had flooded the area and a third individual - believed to be the killer - was killed, according to police sources.

Reports suggest 'at least' two people were involved in the attack which took place as presidential candidates took part in a TV debate nearby before Sunday's election.

The Interior Ministry spokesman said on BFM TV the officers were deliberately targeted and the police union added that one of them was shot dead while sat in a car at a red light.

There are some news outlets headlining 'possible or terror attack.' But I haven't seen anything yet that definitely says it's a terror attack. Although there was a presidential hopefuls debate being held close by and there are elections in a few days.

At this point, who knows? I'll move this to the terror attack section if it proves to be something other than some crazy dude.

City under siege: Latest attack in Paris would be the sixth terrorist strike on the French capital in three years
    • Most recently, on March 18, a convicted criminal was shot dead at Orly Airport
    • By far the most deadly strike was in November 13, 2015, when 130 people died
    • On January 7, two brothers killed 11 inside headquarters of satirical magazine

French police have said tonight's attack was 'probably a terrorist act', and if so it would be at least the sixth terror strike on Paris in three years.

Most recently, on March 18, a convicted criminal with links to radical Islam shouted 'I am here to die for Allah, there will be deaths' seconds before he was shot dead during an attack at Orly airport.

And a month earlier, on February 3, a man was shot five times outside the Louvre museum in the heart of Paris after attempting to storm the historic art gallery

Dramatic video captures French police shooting dead terrorist who killed officer and wounded two others just days before French election - as it's revealed he was released EARLY from 20 year sentence for trying to kill cops

A policeman was shot dead while two other officers were seriously injured by a Kalashnikov-wielding gunman on the Champs Elysees in central Paris - just three days before the French presidential election.

The alleged ISIS gunman, identified as 39-year-old Karim C - who was jailed for 20 years for trying to kill officers in 2001 - parked his Audi and opened fire after police stopped at a red light on the world famous avenue.

French police said the attack was probably a 'terrorist act' and dramatic video footage captured the moment police shot at the assailant, who later died.

Police have now launched a desperate manhunt for a second suspect after heavily armed officers flooded the area in the heart of the French capital.

Officers have been searching the home of the alleged shooter - who was known to security services and had been flagged as an 'extremist' - in east Paris and he had previously said that he 'wanted to kill police'.

The fatal incident unfolded as presidential candidates, including National Front party leader Marine Le Pen, debated on a TV show nearby before Sunday's election.
